WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO INSURE? It’s a five-door family car with a diesel engine; how pricey can it be? Well, it’s in insurance group 24 to 26 (depending on ST-1/2/3 spec), which is massively lower than the petrol ST’s group 34 to 36, but a little higher than a Titanium 2.0 TDCi’s group 19. Shop around high-street insurers and comparison sites, but use a specialist broker if you’re planning on many modifications. WHERE DO I FIND ONE? The ST TDCi sold incredibly well, amounting for just under half of Focus ST production. SUMMER 2014 Focus ST production (pre-facelift) ends. 29 OCTOBER 2014 Facelifted Focus Mk3.5 ST 12-model range goes on sale in ST-1, ST-2 or ST-3 trim with five-door hatchback/ estate bodystyles and choice of 250PS petrol or 180PS diesel powerplants. Revised, aggressive styling includes new headlamps and rectangular fog lamps. Cabin has redesigned dashboard layout and centre console. KEY POINTS OVERALL Mk3 Focus cabins wear extremely well, so watch out for tatty trim, scuffed bodywork and lack of servicing – signs of an abused and neglected ST. IDENTITY Most STs are bought on finance, many have been damaged, and they’re prone to being nicked by thieving scum. A comprehensive history check is essential. BODY Rear wheelarches go rusty, lacquer peels off plastics, and headlamps play up. Loose door seals are pretty much standard equipment. ENGINE Peugeot-sourced derv unit is bombproof, but beware of generic diesel tuning puffing out black smoke, suffering fuel pumps, DPF and EGR deletes. TRANSMISSION Manual or automatic? Don’t be too dissuaded by the dual-clutch auto, because it’s quicker than the manual and suits the diesel engine. Just make sure the oil-change intervals are followed…
