When it comes to legendary Ford racing liveries, the Datapost Mk3 Escort touring cars of the 1980s are true old-school icons. The cars rightly gained the status because of their pace and success as much as their hardcore look – made up of bright red paintwork, contrasting (now retro) graphics and custom split-rim wheels. Campaigned by Richard Longman, the first cars were based on the naturally-aspirated RS1600i for 1983 and ’84, and proved pretty successful. The team then moved onto the more powerful RS Turbo for the 1985 and ’86 seasons; producing around 270bhp, they dominated their class and cemented their place in British touring car history. I’ve been driving the ST for a couple of months now, and after a few thousand miles I can report it’s been a great all- rounder – I’ve even been averaging around 40mpg. A season that started so well with a victory in Monte Carlo back in January has unravelled, with all four Puma Rally1 cars finishing behind all the Toyotas and Hyundais in Catalonia. After selling his Sierra Cosworth, Mark George had his heart set on an Escort Cosworth, only to discover prices had just begun to go through the roof. Instead, he opted for a Mk2 Focus RS and, although it may have been his second choice, it hasn’t stopped Mark turning it into something special. Mark’s been a modified car fan all his life, but it was back in 1992 when he first became involved with a full-on project. Ford Live at Knockhill may be one of the last Blue Oval events of the year – being held at the end of September – but it’s definitely worth a visit. Featuring vehicles from across the UK’s tuned car scene, the Performance and Tuning Car Show is back bigger than ever for 2023. The British GT season finale at Donington Park in October was a two-hour title showdown with Ford, BMW, Aston Martin, Porsche, Toyota, and Audi teams battling for overall and class GT4 honours.
