Max e-mail A First of all you need to be were squid are located, they will be around ribbon weed or kelp beds in relatively clean estuary or oceanic water, if there is a good supply of prawns or fish for them to feed on even better. Low light is preferred early morning or late arvo into the evening however they can be caught throughout the day most of the time. A MULLOWAY released on 2nd January, 2004 off Ardrossan on the east coast of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, has recently been recaptured. After 13 years, three months and one day at liberty the fish was caught again on 3rd April, 2017 by a charter operator fishing in 30m of water off Point Margaret, SA (West Coast of Yorke Peninsula). The mulloway was originally released by a GFC of South Australia member and was measured at 74cm and an estimated 3.5kg. Upon recapture it was measured at 140cm and about 30-35kg. This recapture breaks the record for the longest time at liberty for a mulloway tagged under the program.…

FARMED Atlantic salmon is Australia’s most consumed finfish, but the Tasmanian industry has copped a bit of a battering in the media recently over stocking densities and expansion plans. Now super fund manager Australian Ethical has sold its $10 million worth of shares in Tassal, Australia’s largest salmon farmer. It issued statements of concern about the industry’s commitment to moving towards more sustainable seafood production by substituting wild caught fish based feed with plant based protein alternatives, as are used in the silver perch industry. Australian Ethical has said it will not be investing in any other salmon farming companies until this happens.…

I developed a ripping horizontal retrieve ... It was so vigorous it wore out the anti-reverse bearings on some reels and caught a stack of fish. When two anglers are fishing the same lure from the same boat and one is out fishing the other by a wide margin it’s likely the difference is in how the lure is being retrieved. As much as we believethat knots are magical things ... there is complex mathematics and science behind how a knot holds. Most conventional knots used by anglers snug down on a swivel or the eye of a hook involving wraps, turns, twists and hitches. The uni knot, blood knot and albright are all classic examples of traditional knots that have stood the test of time; they are quick and easy to tie while being relatively strong. In addition to conventional knots there are more specialised and complex friction based knots and connections that don’t tighten onto a hook or swivel but are used when slim, strong connections between thicker leaders and thinner braided lines are employed. THE Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has approved the determination of mid-water pair trawling as an approved fishing method in the Small Pelagic Fishery (SPF) until October 2018. “The decision was made after considering the best available science and data with advice sought from the South East Management Advisory Committee, SPF Scientific Panel, SPF Stakeholder Forum, marine mammal and seabird experts and the public,” an AFMA spokesperson said. “The period to comment publically on the determination of pair trawling as a fishing method opened on 22 December 2016 and closed 10 February 2017. In total, AFMA received 67 submissions, the majority of which were opposed to mid-water pair trawling in the fishery.” This decision comes after AFMA recently increased the slimy mackerel quota by 450 per cent. FOUNDER of Wilson Fishing, Les Wilson, passed away on Good Friday aged 93. Established in 1945 and officially registered as a business in 1946, L. Wilson and Co was founded by Les Wilson and started as a small manufacturing business that turned out swivels on the kitchen table. Les Wilson was an Australian fishing tackle pioneer and a highly respected member of the tackle industry. IN PIECES Q Do multi piece rods have any disadvantages over one piece rods when it comes to action? Geoff Hansen, Geraldton, WA. A In my honest opinion yes, they do. My preference has always to use a one-piece rod and that probably comes from my rock fishing days when we used 12 foot one piece rods for just about everything. You won’t get a purer bend and rod action as that provided by a one-piece glass or graphite stick. Any join or ferrule has to have a negative impact – even it’s very small. Fishing, like the rest of life, is filled with highs, lows and everyday ho-hum. We need the lows to really appreciate the highs and the highs help us cope with the rest. I’ve experienced plenty of angling lows over the years. Perhaps the worst occurred during one of my mulloway handlining trips. I’d motored out to a headland with four live tailor and promptly lost four big mulloway, one to a shark, one to a pulled hook, one to a hook that turned into the bait and then the killer lose that I can still picture in my mind’s eye...
