Catch & release fishing is not exactly a new idea. Sport fishermen dating back more than half a century recognised the need for releasing fish unharmed and in doing so put a sporting value on fish; something that was previously only considered food. An Edith Cowan University survey has found that boat mooring chains used by tourism operators and other island visitors off WA’s Rottnest Island have caused irreversible damage to 48,000 square metres of seagrass meadow. Researchers described the effect of the chains dragging across the seafloor as like a razor removing skin. The problem, of course, is once this species of seagrass is “shaved” it doesn’t grow back. While this study concentrates on the resultant loss of capacity for CO2 absorption, seagrasses provide nursery and refuge areas for many fish species. The same problem has also been noted on the Great Barrier Reef and in areas managed by Marine Parks Australia and is considered to be an additional pressure alongside shipping, runoff and coastal development on marine ecosystem health.…

LIKE many keen fishos I love chasing species from my bucket list. All my past bream fishing experiences over the years have been from the mighty Hawkesbury River northwards chasing the ever-popular yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis). So when I was invited on a trip down south recently to chase black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) with good mates Gary Sullivan and Bob Gordon I jumped at the chance. TROUT PROBLEMS Q I recently fished a lake in Central West NSW for trout and natives. On dusk there were trout “rising” everywhere, but for the life of me I couldn’t catch one. LAST Friday Julian Coyne, Richie Abela and myself fished out of Mallacoota, launching at the new Bastion Point boat ramp. This area has always featured highly on our radar as a location for both marlin and tuna, but with good underwater canyon structure, and in an accessible location, we suspected it could also be a potential spot for daytime swords. After several hours trolling in some cooler water we got onto some good structure and sent the first rigged squid to the bottom. Having always heard how anglers hook these monsters in Tassie as soon as they get the bait to the bottom, this was no different and the rod immediately loaded up. 1 GOOD NEWS /BAD NEWS AGAIN FROM THE NT While the Northern Territory barra run off fishing in Kakadu this season was disappointing, to the west of Darwin commercial operators took their biggest hauls of threadfin salmon since 2010, following big rains in that area and a proliferation of bait fish and prawns. While this is essentiallly good news for them, it’s not so good for us, given that threadfin would be in the top ten species of most anglers who have caught them. Shots on the ABC of hauls of big dead threadies being unloaded in Darwin around Easter were just plain depressing.…

The beauty of true science is that even if you personally do not believe it, it is still true! BARRAMUNDI have been stocked in Victoria for the first time with 1600 released into Hazelwood Pondage, Gippsland. This is another significant milestone for the Andrews Labor Government in delivering its Target One Million plan to grow recreational fishing. The release is a key step in the development of this new fishery, following successful tank-based acclimatisation trials which indicated the species could survive in pondage water. Barramundi are usually only found in northern Australia, however the unusually warm water in the pondage may provide Victorian anglers with the chance to cast a line for the iconic species much closer to home. Three size classes of barramundi were released today, consisting of 1000 fingerlings at 5cm, 500 fish at 10cm and 100 larger barramundi measuring 30cm. Fifteen of the larger fish carry…

SCIENTISTS have spent the past four years monitoring the movements of kingfish in New South Wales using acoustic technology to tag 70 kingfish between Coffs Harbour and Narooma. Tagged fish were found to be highly resident, spending the majority of their time within 20km of their tagging location. Occasionally, individuals were tracked moving long-distances but did not return to their tagging location – one fish was found to swim over 675 km from Sydney to Tweed Heads. They were also found to be most abundant in 22°C waters, but can be found between 16 and 26°C in NSW. The Sydney Offshore Artificial Reef, located just outside Sydney heads, was found to be a popular spot for kingfish. Nine of the tagged kingfish were detected at the artificial reef, with most…

DO you have and old faithful rod, a well-worn lucky omen you can’t bear the thought of throwing away? Why not give it a make over? All that’s involved is a re-bind and a change of guides and hopefully it will continue to serve you with more years of success. I’ve just finished such a project. The actual blank used, was by no means anything flash, especially in comparison to the new more modern graphite types. It was an old Silstar Power Tip rod that fell into the category of being “lucky”. OVER the past month I’ve had to make some definite choices to look on the "bright side of life". My wife doesn’t cut us much slack in this department: “The glass is either half-full or half-empty. Always reflect on what you’ve got before dwelling on what you haven’t!” Last week I got back home from a four week dream trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Camping on a coral cay, surrounded by white coral sand, fringing coral reef and warm clear water is paradise for us. We love the wildlife (turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and Nemos), we get to dine of beautiful reef fish and enjoy sunsets over the water.
