Not too many magazines survive 50 years. Fishing World has been at the forefront of fishing communication for five decades now and has survived through media changes that have seen virtually all of its paper based competition come and go, particularly in the past decade or so where the impact of social media and online content has seen huge changes in fishing based media. I’ve been a part of this magazine for about 33 years now and have worked closely with five editors over this time. SNAPPER are one of the most popular sport and table fish targeted by anglers in NSW. However, many fishos now choose to release more of their reds, particularly the larger models, in an effort to protect the breeding stock. Up until fairly recently, it was assumed that snapper weren’t a particularly good catch and release option as they tend to suffer the effects of barotrauma. However, research by NSW DPI and other fisheries agencies around Australia has revealed that snapper are actually very resilient to barotrauma, provided they can get back to depth. A UNSW study has found the length that tailor are reaching maturity has increased by 5 cm in four decades, which means some fish are currently being removed too early in their life cycle through the practice of fishing. Size limits of the key fishing species tailor in NSW waters may need to be reconsidered after researchers noted that the specie’s biology has changed over the last few decades. In a paper published recently in Marine Environmental Research, UNSW Sydney researchers found that the length at which maturity occurs has increased by 5 cm in 40 years. FIRST a big congratulations to Fisho on reaching the 50 year anniversary. Long before modern media this magazine was my source of inspiration in rod building and fishing in general; top job to all who have been involved. Recently I was given the duty of replacing a grip and reel seat set up for Fishing World’s very own Chris Yu who owns a beautiful Loomis IMX 8 rod, a perfect tool for bream, flatties, whiting and other estuarine species. This rod had been re-gripped once already but the problem was the rear grip was far too short and felt uncomfortable to use. I have a long history with Yaffa, publisher of Fishing World. It commenced when I had an article published in a little publication edited and owned by Roger Hungerford, the Anglers Digest and Shooters Omnibus. It cost two shillings and six pence. Hungerford owned Afco Pty Ltd and published several fishing and shooting publications, including Outdoors and Fishing. They were edited by Dick Lewers (fishing) and Cyril Waterworth (shooting). Yaffa purchased Hungerford’s magazine which then became Sporting Shooter and remains a sister pblication of Fishing World today. ANGLERS who passionately pursue Australian bass will be getting itchy feet this month as the no-take spawning closure draws to an end. It’s a credit to the majority of bass anglers, who in response to their commitment to stock conservation, cease activities whilst the fish spawn, given that it’s the taking of bass rather than fishing for bass that is prohibited during the closure. D-day (or perhaps B-Day), is September 1, and there will be more than a couple of anglers getting onto the water from day 1. I whole-heartedly support a closed season in which the taking of bass is prohibited. But I’d be happy for a closed-angling season in waterways that hold breeding stock if it was determined scientifically that the fight on a line adversely affected reproduction.…

COMPULSORY lifejacket law implementation in NSW is pretty weird. The Act which covers it says that the Minister can determine high-risk rock fishing areas where jackets must be worn, but for what looks like an abrogation of state government responsibilty, individual local councils need to opt in to the process to make this happen. So in some NSW north coast councils it’s compulsory to wear an approved jacket or risk be fined, while down the road a bit it’s not. Fishing on Dobroyd Head in Sydney Harbour requires a jacket, but across the water on the more dangerous Middle Head a jacket’s not required. And some included “high-risk” areas don’t look very risky at all. There aren’t disparate rules for jackets on boats and kayaks across the state, nor are…

THE Club Marine Barra Nationals is an important tournament held at the end of the wet season run off period on the Daly River in the Northern Territory. I’ve fished this tournament for a few years now, and it is an exciting event on my fishing calendar. The event this year was the toughest tournament since the event began over 20 years ago. A very poor wet season combined with low river levels combined to produce the lowest catch rate in the history of the tournament. Each barramundi over 40cm long (the minimal length of a scoring fish) represented over 40 hours of fishing, and more than half the field of 72 teams failed to catch a single fish. PHOTOGRAPHER OSSIE EMERY Many of the photos attached to this story were the work of talented photographer and cinematographer Ossie Emery. Ossie was known for the cinematography behind the groundbreaking TV series, A Fisherman’s World, which aired on ABC television in the 1970s. The series, featuring Ron Calcutt, became a benchmark for future generations of fishing filmmakers. Emery also shot a number of iconic photographs documenting the high speed spinning craze of the same era. The photos featuring the likes of Ron Calcutt and Jack Erskine were published in Fisho during the 1970s and remain iconic symbols of the birth of Australian sport fishing. Beyond fishing, Emery was an accomplished and respected cinematographer and photographer who worked on 143 international assignments. He sadly passed away in 2017.…

Fifty years ago – 1969 – was an eventful year. Who could forget the moon landing, Woodstock, President Nixon, or The Beatles’ Abbey Road album? Closer to home and this month, 50 years ago, Ron Calcutt, founder and original editor, put together the very first edition of Fishing World. Back then it was called the Australian Angler. It later morphed into The Australian Angler’s Fishing World, and after that, Fishing World as we know it today. SO many of the keys to being a consistently successful angler aren’t mystical secrets, but come down to common sense. One of the most famous quotes attributed to the late, great US fly fishing writer Bernard “Lefty” Kreh is that “common sense ain’t that common”. Choosing the correct cover can make a break the success of a magazine. Here at Fisho we go to great lengths to find the best possible cover image. But what is the best type? Fifty years is long enough to figure out what works and what doesn’t sell and we believe we’ve found the formula. The covers these days are far removed from yesteryear. It’s fair to say in 2019 we take far less risk and there’s less “experimental” covers. I’VE seen some pretty crazy lure and fly selections over the years. I’d like to take a look at lure selection this month and mix in a few funny anecdotes along the way. Of course some fish will hook themselves, but for most a firm strike is good to make sure the hook has found its mark.
