ICONIC Queensland reel manufacturer Alvey Reels is celebrating its 100th year of operation. Back in July 2017, the company announced on Facebook it would be shutting down at the end of October that year, a result of negative economic influences. That post went viral and sparked an influx of orders from loyal Alvey customers, allowing the fishing business to stay open a little while longer to meet demand. Fast forward two years and Alvey is now celebrating its centennial with a video of the brand’s journey and long history with Australian fishing. “On big tides large barramundi use the tide to move up river chasing baby barra and mullet and even when the water is filthy the fishing can be excellent.” In northern Australia there are only two seasons, the wet and the dry. Each year barramundi fishermen across the country cross their fingers hoping for sustained heavy rains in the north. These rains are the life blood of all the coastal ecosystems, in exactly the same way that rain is to farmers, native animals and vegetation. In the Northern Territory in the 2018/19 wet season the rains never came in a sustained way. While some rivers had a run off of sorts, in general it was a miserable wet season in most of the catchments, and the fishing was very poor.…

There aren’t many inshore sportfish offering the same level of accessibility as Australian salmon. As a recreational species they tick a lot of boxes; only being lessened by their table qualities. They jump, fight hard, are found in good numbers and hit lures with absolute aggression. Their considerable appetite and drive to feed ensures that when fish are found, they will typically eat. IT was a bitter sweet end to Australia’s bushfire crisis. No sooner were the flames extinguished, the floods began, and it wasn’t long before we started hearing reports of major fish kills. Bushfire devastated areas were most susceptible, with ash and topsoil washed into the river systems creating serious problems for native fish. It was widespread from the South and North Coasts of NSW to inland waterways and impoundments. Some of the worst fish kills happened west of the Great Dividing Range with similar floods occurring. MULLOWAY, more commonly known as jewfish, are a popular target species throughout most of southern Australia. Most of the recreational fishing effort takes place off the rocks, in the estuaries or on the beaches. These highly mobile fish are often not easy to catch, and even the best mulloway anglers often put in long hours on the water in order to be successful. They can be caught on lures and baits, and are more active after dark when they often move long distances to chase baitfish. On the offshore grounds, usually in depths between 10 and 40 metres, mulloway often hold up in caves, wrecks or under ledges in large schools in daylight hours. Once the sun sets the schools move away from cover, sometimes moving inshore towards the mouths…

By the time summer rolls around, we freshwater anglers are getting starry-eyed and listless. For those of us who fish temperate waters, mulloway are a prize catch usually made at great effort. Night is the most productive period to fish and patience is a must. But be warned, the chance of addiction is rife and as numbers increase, the addiction is not satiated, but rather grows exponentially. Cure is hard and cold turkey, a nightmare! WITH a change of season just around the corner and much of Australia experiencing torrential rain and floods, now is the perfect time to share my thoughts on a new pair of boots. I once thought “gum boots” were uncomfortable and impractical for fishing. And I was probably right. That’s because the old style of cheap plastic boot were unsuitable for walking longer distances, made your feet cold in winter and were slippery on wet river stones or boat ramps. The alternative was spending a few more dollars and buying a higher end product designed for sailing. We don’t test a lot of flats skiffs here at Fisho. They are usually considered specialised fishing boats but very well suited to many forms of flats and estuary fishing. Many people think flats fishing is only available in northern Australia but there are estuary flats right throughout NSW and Queensland. I did a lot of flats fishing in southern NSW when I lived there but a flats skiff is also very well suited to estuary and impoundment fishing which makes them extremely versatile.
