KEEN readers of this magazine will be well aware of the great surf fishing to be had along the coasts of NSW and Queensland. The phenomenal beach fishing for bread-and-butter species like tailor, sand whiting, bream and dart in the warmer northern states is compelling and well documented. I wrote the feature for this magazine two weeks ago, and since that time there have been many more restrictions of our social activities, and most of the inland dams are now shut to all recreational activities, including fishing. I RECENTLY caught wind of a company on the Gold Coast that was bringing the art of rod building into our schools. The idea was to encourage the youth to think outside the square, giving them a sense of achievement. You could add to that a sense of pride when the project is finished. I don’t know about you, but I have found it difficult get a clear understanding of the dos and don’ts of Covid–19 guidelines, particularly as they relate to fishing and boating. I knew I could go into the community for exercise, but I wasn’t sure where fishing fitted, or if I could use my boat. I love chasing bream in winter. While most pundits will tell you there’s nothing better than seeing cicada-obsessed bream slurp a lure off the surface, I get the same feeling when I detect that subtle bite that only comes when your fishing super-slow presentations in super-deep water. I’VE always had a local pond to fish. I can remember at 10 years of age we lived in Sydney and had a holiday house at Werri Beach just south of Kiama. My brother and I used to fish the local Werri Lagoon every weekend we were down there for poddy mullet, bream and eels. SYDNEY-based Rod Findlay is an experienced game fisho and no stranger to offshore boats. A few years back I spent a day onboard Murrifin, Rod and his brother Craig’s 39 foot flybridge cruiser. Murrifin was no ordinary boat. Rod and Craig built the boat, creating a deadly game fishing platform, one that’s spent many days successfully chasing fish off the East Coast. Rod also had a second boat which was recently sold, a large trailerable centre console, and it needed a replacement.
