It inspires. It energizes. It invokes. Color is the most powerful tool in an interior designer’s arsenal. As tasteful as they are, neutrals reveal nothing about a homeowner. Yet, a breakfast nook saturated in sunburst yellow, a crimson-red living room in the style of Diana Vreeland, or a master suite in varying shades of purple can speak volumes. In October 2022, designer Chelsea Lane purchased a 3,500-square-foot building at 5710 W. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach and her new adventure in design began. Nearly a year to the day, Lane is a newly minted showroom owner with the recent debut of Chelsea Lane & Co. Specializing in wallcoverings and textiles, the space offers the latest collections from leading companies such as Phillip Jeffries and Schumacher, as well as from smaller artisan brands Lane has come across throughout her 20-year career in interior design. The showroom also serves as a studio where customers can become acquainted with Lane’s various services, which ranges from conception-to-completion commissions to one-on-one consultations about everything from custom drapery to window treatments. Proving there’s apparently nothing she can’t do, designer Kelly Wearstler has partnered with the Belgian homeware brand Serax for her foray into tabletop. Comprising two main lines, Zuma and Dune, the pieces are characterized by abstract motifs and unexpected juxtapositions of materials. In Zuma, Wearstler plays with futuristic three-dimensional grids and ancient glassware motifs for a perfect balance between technology and handcraft. Dune offers a refined take on ancient Greek pottery with two-tone finishes of matte and high-gloss ceramics that enhance the sculptural crests and ridges on dishes and platters. It’s a fact of progress: The older the structure, the more multifaceted its history. As Father Time marches on, so too does the need for reimaginations—the most successful of which strike a balance between honoring a building’s origins and shepherding it into a new life. Such is the case at Hotel Saint Vincent, a boutique property in New Orleans’ Lower Garden District that got its start as an orphanage. Irish immigrant Margaret Haughery (a beloved philanthropist immortalized in a statue of Italian marble at the corner of Prytania and Clio streets) founded The Saint Vincent’s Infant Asylum in 1861. The designer was asked to come up with a vacation retreat with Mediterranean and Moroccan influences that would stand out from others in the area. THE BACKSTORY Named for the ancient Japanese ritual of rope bondage, which has evolved from an erotic practice to a form of body relaxation, as well as an artistic technique, the Shibari cabinet is a poetic exploration of all that. “This journey commenced several years ago when I embarked on a daily practice of Gaga dance,” says creator Hagit Pincovici. “Through this dance form, I developed a profound awareness of the body, its contours, its motion, and, consequently, an appreciation for our sensuality.” THE PROCESS The piece begins with a stainless-steel framework resembling a ribcage. What is your overall approach to color in any interior design commission? First, we have to make sure the strength of color is one that the client can happily live with. Then, the colors chosen have to complement one another, both in value and balance. Just like proportions affect furnishings, the same theory applies to color. Do you find that many homeowners are apprehensive about color? I haven’t found that to be the case with ours. Their choice of art usually leads the way when it comes to the color selections inside their homes. In terms of palette, what are your Florida clients asking for these days? “EXCLUSIVE” IS A WORD OFTEN USED to describe Alys Beach, a walkable and private community on the Panhandle that has been gaining popularity since development began there in earnest in 2004.
