One look at it and you’ll be convinced that it’s an actual off-road beast chock full of off-road performance parts and accessories. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 Concept even features real-deal King remote-reservoir shocks and all-new lower control arms that are wider by 2 inches per side, which give it an aggressive stance and a 4-inch wider track width for more stability while wheeling in various types of terrain. IN THE LAST INSTALLMENT, WE INTRODUCED our ’81 Toyota Trekker 4x4 and tore into the axles (“Import Upgrades,” Mar. ’15). Our truck had many of the common popular aftermarket Toyota solid-axle improvements. For the most part, our truck worked great as a trail crawler. But we were getting bored with going slow and wanted to steer the truck into high-speed terrain without decreasing capability in the rocks. To do this, we needed to rethink our suspension. We just returned from the colossal 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, and out of the scores of 4x4s on display, there were a couple of rigs that smacked people right between the eyes. There was “THE LEGEND,” a Jeep Wrangler-based rig, and a Ram 3500 with a Jeep Wrangler ridin’ piggyback. Both were very unique, and they definitely had people talking. SAY “STUDEBAKER” IN A GROUP OF MODERN four-wheelers and everyone will know the name. A few can name some of the better-known Studebaker cars and most will recall that Studebaker built trucks. Fewer will know they had a four-wheel-drive option. Studebaker entered the motor vehicle business in 1902, after 50 years building horsedrawn wagons and tack. Horse-drawn equipment would remain the core of the Studebaker Company until after World War I when the motor age became the focus and it became an auto-industry “Big Deal.” Studebaker built allwheel-drive military trucks for World War II, along with the legendary M-29C Weasel. Nowadays, it seems that many nameplates are getting tacked onto SUVs that seem to be designed only for inclement weather. These three vehicles are designed to be capable off-road, and they have specific features to make that happen. THE FORD BRONCO (PRODUCED IN THE WAYNE, MICHIGAN, FORD TRUCK PLANT) WAS INTRODUCED WITH the ’66 model and lived a long 31-year production life. It was designed to be an all-purpose vehicle, drawing many of its design cues from the F-100 and F-150 pickup trucks of the same era. The last year of production for the United States was marked by the ’96 model and was then replaced by the four-door Ford Expedition.
