Owing £10,000 to the taxman, the Gloucestershire club turned down their elevation to the Southern Premier League, leading to the resignation of a host of senior figures at the club. Yeovil defender Nathan Smith didn’t fancy partying the summer away in Ibiza – no, he had something a little quieter in mind. Attacking football was back on the menu in League Two last season, following a two-year cycle in which the division had been dominated by defensive, counter-attacking teams. The 2015-16 campaign produced an extra 155 goals compared to 2014-15 and 181 goals more than 2013-14. It was the highest-scoring season for five years, with four different players (Bristol Rovers’ Matty Taylor, Leyton Orient’s Jay Simpson, Barnet’s John Akinde and AFC Wimbledon’s Lyle Taylor) hitting 20 goals – as many as in the previous four years combined. That’s why we’re barely even embarrassed to admit we tipped Leicester for relegation last season, or that Chelsea would win the league title and not be left more humiliated than a damp-trousered schoolboy.
