This shade-loving perennial remains popular nearly 20 years after its debut, thanks to its good looks and vigor. Each maplelike green leaf bears a deep burgundy star at its center. From midspring to early summer, bottlebrush flowers rise above the foliage, with tiny pink buds revealing frothy white blossoms. The buds within each spike open from bottom to top, creating a two-toned appearance while the bloom proceeds.
