HEINEKEN CLASSIC (PGA Tour of Australasia, 1990-2005) Began as the Vines Classic at The Vines Resort in Perth, before growing to become the biggest prizemoney event on the Australasian Tour as the European Tour co-sanctioned Heineken Classic at Royal Melbourne GC. AIM UP Get your putting alignment and start line sorted. You can put the best stroke on every putt, but if you’re aiming at the wrong spot, it’s not going in! I find a good drill is to find yourself a flat and straight putt of about 3 metres, then make a gateway – using a couple of balls put down about one metre away – and get used to where your alignment is and how your start line compares to what you know has to happen. Many club golfers just automatically set up in the middle of the tee and swing away, but if you notice how the professionals on Tour do it you might shoot lower scores. Simply by following the lead of players like Ariya Jutanugarn you might be able to hit one or two more drives in the fairway, especially on a tee shot you find difficult, which could prove the difference between shooting 81, 82 and 77 or better. Choosing the correct side of the teeing ground often greatly changes the angle of the shot and this can make you feel more confident of hitting the fairway before you swing. Following an historic gathering of more than 250 people across the Australian golf industry, the key bodies – the PGA of Australia, the WPGA Tour and Golf Australia – have committed to publishing a new Australian golf strategy by the end of 2021. This follows an exhaustive consultation process and a two-day online conference held recently. Speakers included U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy and a range of industry figures, club managers and broader sports consultants along with former AFL Commissioner Colin Carter. The chief executives of the three main bodies – Karen Lunn (WPGA), Gavin Kirkman (PGA) and James Sutherland (Golf Australia) also made impassioned speeches. Golfers all around the country are set to take part in another edition of The Longest Day, which is the ultimate golf challenge to raise funds for the Cancer Council. The Longest Day will officially take place on Monday December 13 this year, but participants can hold their event at their local golf club anytime during December. Participants are challenged to play four rounds of golf in one day at their own club with their friends and fellow members. The low trajectory, high spinning chip shot is a great recovery shot to have in your arsenal. This is especially true if you are playing a course with greens that are tiered or have dramatic slopes. Being able to play the low-and-spinning chip shot allows you to carry your approach beyond any slope and then get the ball to stop quickly. The biggest mistake most amateur golfers make with this shot is all about the set-up. Many players will know to slightly de-loft their lob or sand wedge to get the lower trajectory, and they simply put the ball back in their stance.
