If the Saudi-financed, Greg Norman-run LIV Golf Invitational series of events sought to gain a global presence in a few short months since start up, and to ruffle some feathers along the way, their job is done. The big-name defections to LIV Golf – including Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau – somehow caught the PGA Tour by surprise, despite the rumblings of start-up golf leagues dating back at least three years. I get asked this a lot: what exactly is my role within ‘Ogilvy, Cocking and Mead’, the course design company in which I am a partner alongside Michael Cocking and Ashley Mead. If you’re lucky enough to watch Tour players practice, you’ll see that many of them spend countless hours working on their alignment. There will be days when you feel uncomfortable over the ball. They are the days when you need to really check your alignment. If you’re not aligned correctly, not only is it uncomfortable, but it wreaks havoc on your ability to make good, consistent golf swings. Most Tour pros, like Will Zalatoris here, use two alignment rods during their practice, even when they’re not working on their alignment. SET IT UP Gather six balls and separate them into two teams of three. You’re going to chip the first three balls with your lead hand (left for the right-hander), the second three with your trail hand. It doesn’t matter which club you use, but make sure it’s the same club – and shot – for both hands. CHART THE RESULTS After completing all six shots, add up the total footage you have left yourself with the three lead-hand balls, and then the total footage for the second group of trail-hand chips. SET IT UP Set up two vertical ‘goalposts’. Alignment sticks are ideal, but anything straight will suffice. Keep the gap between them pretty small; the length of your smartphone is a pretty good guide. Take five strides back from the sticks and gather nine golf balls. As you may have worked out, this is a game of clubface control. 1 HOOK With the first three balls, you’re going to draw or hook the ball around the right-hand stick (right-handers). Your goal is to generate enough hook shape for the ball to miss the righthand upright but finish on or across the target line, framed by the two sticks. STRIKE FORWARD, NOT DOWN Chances are you’ll be tempted to move the ball back in your stance to create a more downward attack and guarantee a clean strike. But chances also are that you’ll discover this doesn’t work. As you get steeper the clubface moves through its optimal striking position faster, making your strike more reliant on perfect timing. Play this game for a while and through necessity you’ll soon find the most effective attack for a chipping strike. SET IT UP For this game, use a 9-iron or pitching wedge. Take five balls into the practice bunker. But instead of making your usual, long bunker swing, play an orthodox chip-and-run shot of 10-20 yards. How many of the five can you strike solid and clean? Corinne Dibnah was just five-years-old when she started swinging a golf club around the nine-hole Bowen course in North Queensland. At 19, she won the Australian Women’s Amateur at Royal Queensland. SET IT UP We are going to hit five balls with three different golf grips – putting grip (reverse overlap), lead hand low, and regular. Use the same club, and hit shots from the same place. At the end of each set of five, add up the total footage you have left yourself to hole out. BODY TALK As you try this grip, you should notice three things: ■ Because this grip sets a more vertical shaft, you’ll need to move the ball closer to your feet. That creates a straighter path to your action, the club moving more up and down the line. How does this affect accuracy? ■ The more vertical shaft also brings the heel of the sole off the turf. STEP 1 PALM FACES UP Start by allowing the ball to come to rest in a palm that’s facing the sky, as pictured. Take a moment to visualise the throw and flight that would get the ball near the hole. HIGH FLYER Now throw the ball. Of course keep the palm upward through the release, lobbing the ball high towards the hole. Repeat this upward release 10 times. STEP 2 PALM FACES FORWARD For the second part of this game, hold the ball with the palm facing towards the flag. This time, release the ball with the palm facing forwards.
