IN THE NEWS The R&A and USGA have announced a proposal to roll back the ball through a Model Local Rule (MLR) that could come into effect in January 2026 at the elite men’s level. It comes after five years of research through the Distance Insights Project following concern in some quarters that iconic courses are becoming obsolete due to increasing hitting distances. The MLR has been proposed as a way to address that concern and reduce the importance of distance on the male professional tours. However, its use will be at the discretion of event organisers, meaning it could be adopted at some events and not others. Specifically, the distance limit for balls tested under the proposed MLR would be 317 yards (plus three yards’ tolerance) when struck with…

After the success of the updated S1 model that launched in 2022, Motocaddy has taken its ‘S’ series of electric trolleys one step further by embedding its GPS system into the handle. The S5 GPS shares a lot of the same DNA that made the S1 such a hit last year. This includes the brand’s one-step folding system and the ‘Click-‘n’-Connect’ battery. Martin Slumbers has been chief executive officer of The R&A for eight years. During that time, the organisation has played an instrumental role in moving golf forwards on a global level. The Open has become a far more commercial enterprise, allowing for greater investment back into the game. Shaping the ball left or right is simpler than you think as a lot of it comes down to set-up. To hit a draw, aim right with your body and nudge the ball position slightly back in your stance. Close the clubface slightly so it’s pointing somewhere between your target and body line. Now, just swing along the line of your feet and the ball will curve from right to left. For a fade, do the opposite. Back to basics As well as the grip, check the rest of your basics. In particular, make sure the ball position isn’t too far back in your stance.…

In its simplest form, golf should be fairly straightforward. Rule 1, for example, introduces the central principles of the game and states that “each hole starts with a stroke from the teeing area and ends when the ball is holed on the putting green (or when the Rules otherwise say the hole is completed).” However, the latter part of this statement – ball is holed on the putting green – is often the source of clubhouse debate, especially in situations where the ball isn’t neatly resting at the bottom of the cup. The very top-rated courses in the UK and Ireland can command high green fees. These are the best of the best and, as such, tee times for visitors are in high demand. Some of the high-season, full rates are on the pricey side, but there are ways to visit the top courses and pay a little less than that top-end rack rate. One of the best ways is to play outside of high season. Most clubs and courses in our Top 100 offer reduced rates for winter golf; many will also offer lower shoulder-season rates for golfing in early spring and autumn. A glance at the criteria for evaluating our finest courses reveals that, while visual beauty is an important constituent, it is not quite so influential as others. Preparation It’s vital that you read the lie carefully. Even subtle differences can affect club choice and the distance you can realistically expect (e.g. is it sitting down a little or is there a mini-mound of sand behind the ball?). You need a stable foundation, but avoid digging your feet in too much. Stay fixed over the ball and swing slower to retain balance. Ball above feet This is perhaps the trickiest situation to deal with from a fairway bunker. It presents a much greater risk of you catching the sand early and either leaving it in there or achieving very little distance. GM verdict If asked to consider the brand that offers the most user-friendly irons in the game, many will immediately think of Ping and specifically its G ranges, which have helped inconsistent golfers mask their ball-striking flaws for nearly two decades. The Ping G425 iron was, and still is, an incredibly accurate model, but in a world where distance is king, it didn’t have the ‘wow’ factor of the TaylorMade Stealth or Wilson D9. GM verdict Few irons can claim as big a makeover, from a visual perspective at least, as the new Srixon ZX4 Mk II. Where the prior version was a true hybrid-iron with a chunky sole and bags of offset, the latest iteration bears very little resemblance, but all the changes are certainly positive ones. Michael Harris – Wallasey I have a great affinity with Wallasey, having played the course a number of times over the years. I played it when I was at university, I played it on my stag do and I’m a member at Hoylake just down the road. Wallasey has been close to making it into the top 100 in the past and I, like many links fans, am delighted it has earned its place this time. The course boasts some stunning holes up in the dunes but was let down by weaker stretches in years past. The northern coast of Spain certainly lacks the wider reputation among UK golfers of the Costa del Sol in the south, or the area around Barcelona in the east. Women are busy for so many reasons. It’s the way we like to be and we are damn good at managing our lives. But my efficiency in getting a long list of stuff done has often been sketchy, with newer tasks and immediate deadlines often taking priority. Flipping when you chip is a common fault. The lead wrist breaks down and the trail hand takes over, resulting in bad strikes. The cross-handed drill is a great way to address this. Put your left hand below your right on the grip and you’ll notice immediately how that levels your shoulders. It’s generally followed by someone saying you’ve lifted your head or come up on the ball. Sometimes, that isn’t actually the case. I love to purposely try to top one with my head down. Twelve years ago, Phil Mickelson suffered a health scare. He was just shy of his 40th birthday when his body started sending warning signs: joint aches and pains, which, at times, became excruciating. GM verdict Cobra’s Aerojet range of drivers offers a new, aerodynamic design that promises greater clubhead speed from a more efficient overall design. A very warm welcome to the 2023/24 Golf Monthly rankings, the tenth biennial list of the Top 100 Courses in the UK & Ireland. Having begun life as a Top 120, the process was refined in 2009/10 to make it a Top 100 at the same time as a second tier was added – the Next 100. We continue to believe that what sets our rankings apart is that they are compiled entirely by knowledgeable, regular club golfers who are enthusiastic about golf course architecture. Five Top 100 courses tee off on a short hole, but ‘short’ is a bit of a misnomer for all five measure 200+ yards off the tips. And two of our quartet of closing par 3s also stretch to 200+ yards... Opening par 3s The most famous of our opening par 3s is the only one on the Open rota. Royal Lytham and St Annes’ 1st hole can stretch to 206 yards off the blue tees, with five bunkers closely guarding the entrance to the green. It is possibly an easier angle off those back tees as you are playing directly between the left and right bunkers. Back at the turn of this century, an ambitious sales rep from North Carolina called Chris Knott spotted a gap in the golf apparel market. Going to a manufacturer, he sourced luxury cashmere sweaters in a range of vibrant colours and sold them to country clubs.
