It depends. From salon gel manicures to at-home gel nail kits, these long-lasting, quick-drying polishes that are set with UV or LED light have become more ubiquitous than ever. They’re not without caveats, though: Gel lacquers can contain ingredients that cause skin redness and itching, and there is potential for nail damage during the removal process. Plus, in a GH Beauty Lab investigation, half of the gel nail kits evaluated did not meet the FDA’s Cosmetic Labeling Requirements for accurate listing of product ingredients. You’ve likely seen the term “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly” on sunscreen packaging. Many brands stopped using two chemical SPF active ingredients, oxybenzone and octinoxate, after studies suggested that they could be toxic to or slow the growth of coral. However, “evidence regarding different SPF filters is incomplete, and the scientific community hasn’t determined which are safe or unsafe for reefs,” says Mark Cullen, M.D., founding director of the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences and vice-chair of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) committee that analyzed all available aquatic toxicity data on chemical and mineral sunscreen filters in the U.S. in a report for the NAS and the Environmental Protection Agency. “Descriptors such as ‘reef-safe’ have no official meaning and are more for marketing than to inform that a product has…

What exactly is the difference between affordably priced and “prestige” products? It’s in the details. “Some affordable and pricey beauty products may not differ much from a formula stand-point, meaning they have similar ingredients, and they may perform on par with each other in terms of benefits and aesthetics, like feel,” explains GH Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann. “Most of the cost of high-end products comes from the packaging and marketing.” Other factors can contribute as well: “Sometimes fragrances, unique extracts or organic, sustainably sourced ingredients can bump up the price too,” she adds.
