The number of chemicals we expose ourselves to through beauty products is mind boggling. In fact, one 2008 US study showed that women use an average of 12 cosmetic products with 168 ingredients every day. Blueberries are the hero ingredient in this richly dark, thick and creamy smoothie. Blueberries are wonderfully rich in antioxidants, which can help to counteract premature ageing. They’re also deliciously sweet so add them to things like porridge at breakfast time or have them on their own as a mid-afternoon snack. You don’t need a huge property to grow an abundant garden. Recently I’ve been making a point, at the weekends especially, of spending time in nature and taking minibreaks. It is amazing how even one night away can relax, restore and rejuvenate. There’s something magical and joyful about swimming under a waterfall and allowing the water to cascade over your head. You can have this experience at Los Chorros near the colonial El Salvadorian town of Juayua. It’s on the garden route (Ruta de las Floras) and not far from San Salvador city. Here, the clear water, which flows from a nearby volcano, has created a stunning veil of seven waterfalls that feed a water hole – a favourite swimming spot. The average year-round temperature is 26°C so a swim here is a perfect refresh stop. The Ruta de Las Flores can be done in a day or over several days at a more leisurely pace. Just a quick word to say how much I LOVE your magazine! The articles are always so well written and relevant to our lives today. Innovative thinking, a strong vision and a little bit of luck has seen Danvers Devereux, managing director and owner of natural body care line Matakana Botanicals, turn his 5-acre rural property in Matakana into a sustainable operation.
