When we were deciding on a partner for the first Good People Awards, Ceres Organics was one of the first to spring to mind. We’ve been working with them since 2011 but they have been around a lot longer (since the 1980s!), doing a lot of good in New Zealand and across the globe. The birth of Ceres Organics can’t be pinned down as an exact moment. In an organic nutshell, its original founder Juliet setting up an organic food stall at a school fair, its director Noel throwing himself into a life-changing book. Coffee grounds (in moderate doses) are a healthy source of nutrients for your soil and are also great for deterring aphids. Simply mulch around your plants with your morning’s coffee leftovers. Two ways with strawberries Use an egg slicer to slice strawberries or kiwifruit for a pavlova. It’s a Wednesday morning and I’m taking a break from the office - temporarily swapping my desk for a massage table. The first time I tasted Emerson’s was at the BrewNZ 2008 awards in Wellington and it was my introduction to the world of craft beer. The brewery won so many awards that night it was impossible not to take note that something truly exciting was coming out of Dunedin. Recently, a friend pulled out one of her make-up brushes to ask me why it was not giving her the results she wanted. She just couldn’t get it to blend her eyeshadow properly. A minimalist bedroom Our bedroom is too small to house more furniture than the bed and two round wicker stools that we use as bedside tables. There’s a small sliding wardrobe for our clothes (mostly on hangers) and a few shelves for footwear. When we first moved in, I was worried about where everything would go, but in hindsight, the tiny room has been a blessing in disguise. Chamomile and Lemon Pillow Spray This blend of chamomile and lemon essential oils is both refreshing and soothing. Growing up, my dad and I were members of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. We would attend meetings and go on nature excursions; I’d always have my little binoculars at the ready for getting a closer look at a tūi or tauhou (wax-eye). I don’t know about you but it’s about this time of year when I feel the pressure dial of life turning up. When I shared this with a friend they told me about Kelly McGonigal’s TED Talk ‘How to make stress your friend’. Shawn Seipler was just another American corporate working for an e-commerce technology company. I first started making nut milks after meeting my husband, who has a dairy intolerance. He always joked his situation was amusing given he grew up on a dairy farm and milked cows, yet could never enjoy his efforts. The island of Mindanao is known as the ‘food basket’ of the Philippines. Eight of the top 10 agri-commodities exported from the Philippines come from the island including Dole pineapples. The farm that grows the pineapples, known as Dolefil, is celebrating its 55th anniversary in the Philippines this year. Dole’s pineapple plantations cover 24,000 hectares on Mindanao near the city of General Santos. Seedlings are grown under lab conditions for four weeks, then split and planted into pots of ground coconut shell used as a growing medium. They are then transferred to the nurseries to allow the root structures to develop before transplanting. Some of the pineapples are also propagated from the heads of mature pineapple plants.
