I t immediately becomes clear after stepping into artist Emma Bass’ home that this is a woman who is besotted with flowers. There are floral spectacles adorning every mantelpiece, table and cabinet in sight. I find Bass in her studio busily multitasking, snapping shots and rearranging a hibiscus flower as part of the vibrant masterpiece she is creating. Her attention to detail is remarkable. “Isn’t it just magnificent,” she says, rearranging the shot, then running out to her garden to scavenge for a hydrangea flower. Step 1: Look out for a stool that has good bones and is sturdy in shape. Think about how you are going to use it. For a mini step stool you’ll want to choose a practical, hardwearing fabric for covering and a firm padding. For a lounge footstool you might choose a lighter or fluffier fabric and a softer padding. Hearty Garden Stew Back in my meat-eating days, I really enjoyed a hearty casserole to warm the chills. However, I wasn’t so keen on the heavy feeling afterwards. Ten years ago we made a family choice to eat less meat. The immediate reaction from people was one of surprise. Some even asked if illness was behind our decision. The first seeds of Ceres Organics were planted at a biodynamic and organic fresh produce stall at Michael Park School market in 1982. This was the vision of mother-of-two Juliet Lamont who had been living in Germany where she’d had access to organic and biodynamic produce. When she moved to New Zealand in the early ’80s she was shocked to discover that even spray-free fruit and vegetables were not readily available in grocery stores and decided to do something about it. Step 1: Scrub the window sash clean with a cleaner and water.
