A few months ago I realised I’d stopped dreaming, and it scared me because I’ve always been a dreamer. I’m not talking about dreaming when you’re asleep, but aspirational dreams. The ones fuelled by fire in your belly. Thankfully, some embers remained, and the great thing about those is they can be fanned to life if you feed them oxygen. In my case, a four-week trip to Central America (see stories on pages 32 and 102) was all that was required. It provided the mind break I needed to reconnect with my inner voice, which for me was rediscovering my creativity and purpose, that put me back into what I call my dream space – a place that allows me to express that. I recently spent two weeks bedridden with a serious illness. During that time I had lots of time to think about what I wanted to do when I recovered. Good sprang to mind and I remembered the delicious recipes that I wanted to make. Yesterday I took a short walk to the supermarket to buy the ingredients needed to start the fun. GARDEN TO PLATE Auckland restaurant One Tree Grill has introduced some new initiatives that it wants to shout out about. Vegetable, fruit and herb gardens have been planted at the back of the restaurant’s offices so that the chefs can prepare meals fresh from garden to plate. When it comes to New Year goals and your relationship there are two considerations. Jenny Joblin KEEP DREAMING Jenny Joblin has loved art ever since she can remember. If you’re a fan of natural products and bunnies, you’ll love the latest beauty trend. Over the past two decades, environmentally conscious cosmetics has been one of the fastest-growing areas of the beauty industry. Now, there is an increasing demand for vegan cosmetics, which are made without animal-derived ingredients and aren’t tested on animals. Largely made to organic and natural principles, vegan cosmetics go one step further by removing common animal ingredients. This includes substances such as beeswax, bee venom and meat by-products including animal collagen, elastin, allantoin and lanolin. Four years ago, my partner Simon Jordan spent three weeks volunteering on a house build in San Miguel Duenas, a settlement on the outskirts of Antigua, Guatemala.
