“WE LEFT THE TRAILHEAD MIDMORNING, SWINGING OUR OVERSIZED PACKS ON WITH A GROAN.” THE Spires are in the wild heart of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, about as far away from any roads as you can get. These remote mountains are bordered to the west by the notorious Prince of Wales Range, to the south by Lake Gordon, by scrubby valleys and the King William Range to the north, leaving one viable way of approach: across the Denison Range from the east.
For the bulk of the journey, there are no tracks, the weather can make the navigation tricky, and you must be completely self sufficient, relying only on the contents of your pack to stay out of trouble. For most walkers, these factors would be a deterrent.
