There is only one thing worse than no chips, when you have been promised them. It is thoroughly disappointing chips. That’s what I now have: dull, mouth-drying batons of mildly soft carbohydrate, under a brittle brown carapace. They have been cooked, after a fashion, in the white plastic and metal box in front of me. I don’t regard the engineering involved as the problem. The problem is language. Unfailingly helpful, John has agreed to collect a three-metre roller we’ve bought from another neighbouring farm that is on the market, with equipment being sold separately. I’ll repay him with sausages, our customary form of exchange. Commercial feed has cost double what it did last year. There’s a long, expensive winter ahead. Chinese authorities strictly censored discussion of a rare protest in Beijing last week that saw large banners unfurled on a flyover calling for boycotts and the removal of Xi Jinping, just days before the most important event of China’s five-year political cycle. Photos and videos of the protest on the Sitong bridge emerged on social media last Thursday, also showing plumes of smoke billowing from the bridge over a major thoroughfare in the Haidian district of the capital. “We want food, not PCR tests. The Russian missiles come to Zaporizhzhia when the “people’s dreams are at their deepest”, says Oleksandr Starukh. The governor of this southeastern region of Ukraine since 2020, Starukh, 49, took the call from his bed at 5.08am on the morning of 24 February when one of the first missiles of the Russian invasion had hit a local air defence system. UK government borrowing costs fell sharply and the pound rallied after Jeremy Hunt said he would cut short the price freeze on consumer energy bills and cancel most of the unfunded tax cuts in last month’s mini-budget. The yield – or interest rate – on 30-year UK government bonds fell by more than 0.4 percentage points on Monday after the chancellor’s statement, with a decline in borrowing costs across the board for short- and long-dated bonds. Organic farmer Kees Saibenga looks at the sea of white and pink blossoms before him. It is mid-July and millions of tiny buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) flowers sway in the wind on the plot he is cultivating in the Dutch province of Drenthe. Saibenga is delighted that the crop is buzzing with a multitude of insect pollinators. “I’m so happy to be growing buckwheat,” said the third-generation farmer. When David Cottrell was about three, his father drove him down a short road toward the beach in their home town of North Cove. It was the early 1960s. The Cottrells owned and lived on a cranberry farm on this part of the south Washington coast. The small, unincorporated settlement, founded in 1884, sat along an embayment behind Cape Shoalwater, a claw-like spit that curled into the north end of Willapa Bay, where an estuary opens into the Pacific. Shortly after her sixth birthday, Rachel Aviv stopped eating. It had been Yom Kippur the week before, and her family had observed the traditional fast. Oranges are to Seville what cherry blossom is to Kyoto, but the city is having to take preventive measures to protect its 48,000 orange trees from deadly bacteria that has already devastated citrus crops in Asia, Latin America and the US. The EU’s Life for Citrus campaign, which includes Spain, Portugal, France and Italy, is developing strategies to stop the spread of huanglongbing (HLB), Mandarin for “ citrus greening”, also known as yellow dragon disease. Caused by the bacteria Candidatus liberibacter, it is spread by insects. The infestation has already reached epidemic levels in 48 Asian countries and 53 African states, as well as Brazil and the US. As the coronavirus grew from a fleeting concern to a fullblown panic, Lili Lim started to hear about people for whom the illness lasted weeks or even months. There were news stories of young people who couldn’t shake their fatigue or cognitive malaise, of people who had to quit their job due to debilitating exhaustion. For Lim, the symptoms were frighteningly recognisable. “We would see them and say that these people are exactly like us,” says the 27-year-old, diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) – also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) – in 2018. In the latest of what can often seem like the “final nails in the coffin ” of biodiversity across Europe, we heard in recent weeks that UK environmental protection is under threat. But while the global scale of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss remains alarming, vital new research, which I helped lead, shows there are also heartening examples of European wildlife bouncing back from the brink. Yiyun Li has made something miraculous out of choosing to write not in her mother tongue, Mandarin Chinese, but in her adopted English. She moved to the US from Beijing with her husband in 1996, when she was 23, and has made her home there ever since. Inside the traditions of English prose, the writers she loves include Thomas Hardy, Katherine Mansfield, William Trevor and John McGahern, and you can feel this in the plain music of her style, the rich surprises of her perception, her relish for the earthy solidity of words.
