1 RUSSIA West wants to ‘dismember’ Russia, Putin claims Vladimir Putin accused the west of seeking to “dismember” Russia. In an interview with the state TV channel Rossiya, Putin claimed the US and its Nato allies wanted to “inflict a strategic defeat on us”. The aim, he said, was to “make our people suffer”, adding: “How can we ignore their nuclear capabilities in these conditions?” Russia’s president said this alleged plot had been under way since the collapse of the USSR, adding that the west was complicit in Ukraine’s “crimes”. If Washington got its way, Russia would be divided into Moscow, the Urals, and other disparate regions, he said, claiming there was “written proof” for his assertion. POLITICS ‘New chapter’ as Northern Ireland deal is agreed Rishi Sunak has sealed a deal with the EU to end the dispute over the post-Brexit Northern Ireland protocol. At a press conference with the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, in Windsor on Monday, the prime minister said: “We have now made a decisive breakthrough. Together, we have changed the original protocol, and are announcing the new Windsor framework.” He said the deal would help restore the previously strained relationship with the EU and go much further than previously thought to fix the “democratic deficit” by giving Stormont ministers a direct say in EU laws applying to Northern Ireland. “This is the beginning of a new chapter in a relationship,” he said. When a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February, Murat Naomi rushed out of his home in his running gear. His mother, who normally covers her hair with a hijab, fled their first-floor apartment without one, fearing the building could collapse. Mother and son went to a large central square in Kilis, a southern Turkish town that hugs the Syrian border and the nearby Bab al-Salam crossing into the north-west of a country they once called home. It was about 5.30am last Sunday when Vincenzo Luciano rushed to the beach in Steccato di Cutro in Italy’s southern Calabria region after receiving a call from a fellow fisherman who described seeing a boat breaking up in the waves. “It was still dark, but when I arrived I could see many bodies on the beach, those of children too,” Luciano said. At least 62 people, including 12 children, died after the wooden sailing boat sank in rough seas off Steccato di Cutro, a hamlet of about 450 residents and a popular tourist spot in summer. To visit her father in the Salvadorian community of El Pepeto, Karla García used to run a fearsome gauntlet of gangs and guns. If you’ve paid even the slightest attention to how Fox News operates, the recent revelations from a legal filing come as no huge surprise. When heatwaves used to hit the French town of Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, townspeople didn’t water their flowers. To walk on to the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the western hemisphere, which faces the astounding prospect of disappearing just five years from now, is to trudge across expanses of sand and mud, streaked with ice and desiccated aquatic life, where a short time ago you would be wading in waist-deep water. Having cleaned up at the Baftas, All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the favourites to win best picture at the Oscars this month. That’s an exciting development for Edward Berger, who directed and co-wrote the film, but German critics may not be so thrilled. The days when pine martens could chase red squirrels from Inverness to Dumfries without touching the ground are long gone. Indeed, martens were extinct from this area until a reintroduction 40 years ago. Today, Dumfries and Galloway Pine Marten Group (DGPMG) is doing its bit to help this fragile population by installing 40 bespoke “marten dens” across Galloway forests. The group monitors these wooden boxes using trail cameras, which enable the detection of a heat source inside all year round – especially important in spring when pine marten kits are born, and winter when den boxes are used for shelter.
