Finland’s probable new conservative prime minister, Petteri Orpo, was exploring coalition options this week after a narrow election win that shifted the Nordic country’s politics to the right and pushed the party of his predecessor Sanna Marin, a star of Europe’s left, into third place. Final results showed Orpo’s National Conservative party (NCP), which campaigned on a platform of reining in public spending, won 48 seats in the 200-seat parliament, with the far-right, anti-immigration Finns party (PS) getting 46 and Marin’s Social Democrats (SDP) 43. The Canary Islands are so close that, on a clear night, surfing instructor Salim Maatoug can see the lights across the water. Fourteen million tourists a year flock to the Spanish archipelago, while in the Moroccan fishing port where Maatoug lives, sand from the Sahara drifts in the streets. “In the Canaries, you can hardly surf because it’s so crowded,” he said. “Here in Tarfaya we have 300km of waves.” Maatoug learned to surf in 2004, and started running free classes for children. A German film director’s whimsical and heartfelt portrait of the English sea-side resort of Cromer has become an unexpected hit among audiences and critics in his home country, sparking an interest in the town on the north Norfolk coast. My wildlife pond has been leaking and, after several unsuccessful attempts at patching it up, the race was on to replace the liner before the smooth newts return to breed. Twenty-five years ago, I planted a single yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) in the shallows. While it is a British native, it’s an invasive species and has taken over my modest 2-metre-diameter pond, sprawling out of its planting basket, self-seeding into the silt. The thick mat of fleshy rhizomes has smothered the more delicate plants, such as miniature bulrushes, water mint and water forget-me-not, and displaced much of the water, leaving the pond almost devoid of life. 1 UNITED STATES/RUSSIA Lavrov rejects US plea for release of journalist Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, called for Russia to free the detained American journalist Evan Gershkovich in a rare phone call with his Moscow counterpart. The American’s plea was rejected by Sergei Lavrov, who responded by saying that US officials and media outlets must “not make a fuss” or try to politicise the plight of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter. On 31 May 1926, a ship carrying the entire Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra docked in Reykjavík. The musicians stayed in Iceland for 17 days, giving 14 concerts of music by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert at venues including a tuberculosis sanatorium.
