The Netherlands and Denmark have announced they will donate up to 61 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine once pilot training has been satisfactorily completed, as Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited both countries after months of entreaties to bolster the Ukrainian air force. Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said her country would provide 19 jets – “hopefully” six around new year, eight more next year and the remaining five in 2025. “Please take this donation as a token of Denmark’s unwavering support,” Frederiksen said. Scientists and academics say they have been warning for several years that invasive grasses covering a quarter of the Hawaii islands are a major fire risk. Untamed grassland helped fuel the spread and intensity of the deadly fires on the island of Maui, according to experts. The fires, which broke out on 8 August, have killed more than 100 people and destroyed the island’s historic town of Lahaina. Hawaii’s last sugarcane mill, which wasfedbya 14,570hectare-plantation on Maui, closed in 2016. “The lands around Lahaina were all sugarcane from the 1860s to the late 1990s. Nothing’s been done since then – hence the problem with invasive grasses and fire risk,” said Clay Trauernicht, an ecosystems and fire specialist at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. The subject of Jay Owens’s new book has long been trying to kill me. Like 300 million or so people around the world, I am asthmatic; what’s more, I am allergic to dust mites. Shevchenkove wants its villagers to come home. There is, however, one significant obstacle: many of its buildings do not have windows. From the early days of the war until November last year when the Russian forces were pushed across the Dnipro River, Shevchenkove and surrounding hamlets in the southern region of Kherson were on the frontline. The mayor was taken prisoner and the population terrorised by hourly shelling. Many fled. After the Russians withdrew, the danger of rockets remained, but many people returned. There are 11,000 people in the region now; that is 5,000 fewer than in peacetime. In Shevchenkove, where the prewar population was 3,200, there are 2,200 residents. S eventy years ago, the fate of Iran hung in the balance, when a US-UK coup to oust the elected prime minister appeared to have failed. The CIA was ready to pull the plug on the operation, but a 28-year-old British intelligence officer, monitoring events from Cyprus, insisted on persevering. The glory game hardly sleeps these days: the Women’s World Cup has only just concluded and there is the constant spectre of the Saudi power grab on men’s elite football. The field containing our beloved forest garden had been tinder-dry, and it took just a casual spark to set it alight. CRIME Nurse to spend life in prison for killing seven babies The serial killer nurse Lucy Letby will never be released from prison after a judge sentenced her to a rare whole-life term for the “sadistic” murder of seven babies. Letby, 33, is only the third woman alive to be given the jail term in the UK. She was sentenced at Manchester crown court on Monday. The former neonatal nurse, the worst child serial killer in modern British history, was also convicted of attempting to murder six more babies at the Countess of Chester hospital. Sentencing Letby, Mr Justice Goss described her crimes as a “cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children”. Fans enjoyed a heady mix of breathtaking skill, dramatic incidents and unexpected results, with record attendances and viewing figures at every stage of the tournament. But it’s not just women’s football that’s enjoying momentous growth. Rugby, cricket and netball have seen record-breaking crowds this year, vast increases in TV viewing figures and new sponsorship deals, with England’s women’s sides enjoying unprecedented success – far more so than their male counterparts. Half an hour’s drive uphill from the busy beaches of Nerja, on Spain’s Costa del Sol, lies the isolated village of El Acebuchal, pretty but spookily quiet on a summer’s morning. Seventy-five years ago, its people were victims of a grievous injustice. What’s an acceptable number of dead people in European waters? What about dead children? I’m asking largely about healthy, albeit exhausted, young people. Migrants, who have braved long, terrible journeys, often experiencing horrific violence and terror. So how many should we write off as justifiable collateral damage in our war against … what, exactly? There is no war except with ourselves: it’s a culture war. The cause is “strong borders”, but strong against what? Despite the rhetoric, this is not an invasion. If the strong borders are to protect our economy – well, these are young, fit workers who could boost our economies. Zadie Smith has spent a long time concertedly not writing historical fiction. Determined to stay in the present, she has been on guard against the lures of the past. But history got her in the end, calling her to a Victorian village called Willesden. Thank goodness: we need minds like hers on the job. The Fraud, her sixth novel, is partly about an enslaved man on a Jamaican sugar plantation, and it’s a comedy: those two things at once. Few would dare; fewer could pull it off as Smith does here, mixing narrative delight with a vein of rapid, skimming satire as she sketches scenes of life in 19th-century England and the Caribbean.
