Nahal Oz, a kibbutz in southern Israel, home to about 400 people, is so close to the Gaza Strip that the nearest Palestinian house in Sajaiya is just 600 metres away. Despite the hi-tech fences and buffer zone separating them, neighbours can see each other hanging out their washing. Until the late 1980s, older members of Nahal Oz used to regularly drive a few kilometres west, to shop in Gaza City’s markets, eat the enclave’s famous seafood, or go for a walk on the Mediterranean coastline. Many still have friends in Gaza. Despite the Israeli blockade imposed in 2007, after the militant group Hamas seized control of the area, they kept in touch with calls and WhatsApp messages. As the death toll rose, and the security consequences multiplied, Israel pointed its finger at Tehran for orchestrating the Hamas attacks. These may have been born of anger at the Netanyahu coalition’s behaviour, including the provocations at al-Aqsa mosque, but Iran and the forces it supports have a longer-term strategic goal: to thwart the US-led effort to normalise relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, a move that would entrench the US in the Middle East – and in Iran’s eyes deprive Palestinians of their last influential sponsor. Iran’s goal is to denormalise the region, and make it near-impossible for Saudi Arabia to strike a deal. EU leaders have clashed again with Hungary after the country’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, insisted at a summit in Granada that it would not support proposed laws to deal with migration. Poland also joined the protest, accusing Brussels of imposing a “diktat” regarding the proposed laws that would apply in the event of a sudden refugee crisis such as in 2015, when more than 1 million people arrived in the EU from Syria and beyond. Using provocative language, Orbán described a deal without Hungary as an assault on his country because EU leaders had gone ahead without his or Poland’s support. Among the more everyday items are cleaning products, smartwatches, novelty T-shirts, knock-off sneakers and barbecue tools, but the common thread is that everything is incredibly, mindbogglingly cheap. This is Temu, the latest Chinese shopping app to take the internet by storm and raise questions about provenance, competition and value. Temu launched in the US in 2022 before expanding to Canada earlier this year, then to several European countries, Australia and New Zealand. It has quickly become a market leader, topping app charts in multiple countries, according to online monitors, and has captured more than half the US market share of its closest rival, the fast fashion giant Shein. Riders of Paris’s No 7 Métro line have long enjoyed a scenic view as the track passes near Austerlitz station, set between the beautifully manicured Jardin des Plantes to one side, and the River Seine on the other. When the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team was banned for two matches and fined for smashing the stumps with her bat in an angry outburst in July, the social media reaction was swift and harsh: Harmanpreet Kaur was called “pathetic” for her anger on the pitch, and labelled “disgusting and stupid”. This is in stark contrast to the response to male aggression in the sport. A quick search of the web finds numerous forums and articles lauding the “angry men of Indian cricket that you wouldn’t want to mess with”, and cricketers such as Virat Kohli, who has been nicknamed “the Hulk” because “he is angry all the time”. Why is Benjamin Netanyahu still prime minister of Israel? More than any other single political leader, on either side of the Israel-Palestine divide, he is responsible for the spiralling tensions, divisions and anger that preceded this horrific catastrophe. Disastrously, Israelis and Palestinians are again at war. Yet Netanyahu’s first duty was to prevent such an eventuality. The saga of China’s second-largest development firm has escalated from a financial crisis to a potentially criminal one with the detention of Evergrande chair and founder Hui Ka Yan. The company resumed trading last Tuesday after it was suspended in the wake of reports of Hui’s apprehension. But analysts say signs point to a potential liquidation, which could have drastic ramifications for China’s economy. Set in post-apocalyptic Dhaka, Nuhash Humayun’s Moshari became the first Bangladeshi film to qualify for the Oscars last year. 1 ISRAEL UK, US and allies offer state of Israel ‘steadfast support’ The leaders of the US, UK, France, Germany and Italy released a joint statement expressing “steadfast and united support” for the state of Israel and “unequivocal condemnation” of Hamas. Global temperatures soared to a new record in September by a huge margin, stunning scientists. The hottest September on record follows the hottest August and July, with the latter being the hottest month ever recorded. The high temperatures have driven heat-waves and wildfires across the world. September 2023 beat the previous record for that month by 0.5C, the largest jump in temperature ever seen. September was about 1.8C warmer than pre-industrial levels. Datasets from European and Japanese scientists confirm the leap. The heat is the result of the continuing high levels of carbon dioxide emissions combined with a rapid flip of the planet’s biggest natural climate phenomenon, El Niño.
