Just a few short months ago, Sweden’s Nato membership seemed a very long way from being a done deal. Having submitted its application to join in May 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it seemed at times as though Stockholm might be left hanging interminably. While Finland, which had applied to join the alliance at the same time, became a member at record speed last April, Sweden got stuck in a diplomatic quagmire. Last year a series of Qur’an burnings in Sweden inflamed ties with Turkey. As recently as September, Viktor Orbán’s government was embroiled in a public war of words with Sweden over criticism of Hungary’s democracy and teaching in Swedish schools. In March 2022, I published an investigation into the crimes of Matthew Hardy, who had been sentenced to nine years in prison in what was then believed to be the UK’s worst-ever case of cyberstalking. The story caught the public’s attention and I later turned it into a six-part Guardian podcast series, Can I Tell You a Secret?, which topped the UK podcast charts. 1 UKRAINE Zelenskiy gives battlefield death toll for the first time Volodymyr Zelenskiy has given a figure for the number of Ukrainian battlefield deaths in the war with Russia for the first time, acknowledging that 31,000 soldiers have been killed. Speaking in Kyiv a day after the two-year anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s invasion, the Ukrainian president said he believed his country would win despite recent military setbacks. The African Union (AU) is marking 2024 as its first Year of Education. This could not have come at a better time. Commitment to education has marked the continent’s progress since the 1960s era of independence. Now more than ever, this resolve must transform Africa into the world’s powerhouse for the 21st century. In 60 years Africa has made considerable progress in education, with more children finishing school. Primary school completion rates across the region between 2000 and 2022 rose from 52% to 6 7%. High school dropout rates slowed too, with 50% of pupils completing lower secondary, up from 35%, and 33% in upper secondary education, up from 23%, while the number of tertiary education students has risen from fewer than 800,000 in 1970 to above 17 million today.…

Last week had started well for the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC). Keir Starmer had finally backed calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the Prince of Wales had raised his concerns about the appalling loss of life in Gaza. Russia’s war against Ukraine has never been only about territory and artillery, about politicians and putative peace deals. Of course, that is the easiest and most acceptable register in which to consider unthinkable violence: as a geopolitical problem happening at a far distance. Tucker Legerski and his wife, Megan, have spent more than two years and tens of thousands of dollars trying to have a baby. Married since 2021, the Alabama couple last year embarked on in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). After they retrieved eggs, a specialist combined those eggs with sperm to create four quality embryos. Last autumn, they successfully transferred one embryo, resulting in a pregnancy – but eight weeks in, it ended in a miscarriage. The couple had planned to attempt another embryo transfer this autumn. ‘This is bigger than going from A to B,” says Edward Fuglø. “This is a route into another world.” Fuglø is a Faroe Islands artist who has created the paintings decorating the arching interior of a new tunnel snaking beneath the north Atlantic. Glowing, stylised human figures, many wearing Viking helmets and carrying spears, loom with a 3D intensity from steely grey walls. The figures are accompanied by longships, mythic enchanted horses, cattle, birds and depictions of ancient stone ruins. Keir Starmer can be a hard man to read. The backstory we will hear endlessly in the run-up to the election – that his father was a rather emotionally distant toolmaker, his mother a nurse who suffered with a painful form of arthritis, and that they raised four children on a tight budget in a pebble-dashed semi – explains him to some extent.
