The provisional measures issued by the international court of justice (ICJ) ordering an immediate halt to Israel’s military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah represent the starkest warning yet to Israel that its offensive risks creating conditions that could be framed as potentially genocidal. The ruling, agreed by a majority of 13-2 judges, almost exclusively cited UN agencies and senior officials – including the UN’s secretary general – to paint a picture of the disastrous situation facing Palestinians in Gaza, half of whom are children. The word was emblazoned on the lectern as Keir Starmer responded to Rishi Sunak’s rain-soaked speech last Wednesday and, lest there were any doubts about Labour’s key campaign message, he said it eight times in his brief address. A one-word slogan has the merit of being simple and clear – and Labour believes that “Change” will chime with the public’s widespread sense of exasperation at the state of the country. In a recent YouGov poll, when asked about the prospect of a general election, 58% of respondents – including more than a third of those who voted Tory in 2019 – said it was “time for a change”. Under the late spring sun on a recent Saturday afternoon, these were some of the sounds to be heard in Kharkiv’s Shevchenko Park: birds chirruping; young couples laughing over iced coffees; tinny pop music playing from speakers mounted on lampposts; pensioners gossiping on the benches; and, at 11 minutes to three, a prolonged explosion that reverberated in the chest like a rumble of thunder. Every year about 130 million households across Europe burn almost 40% of the continent’s total gas consumption to heat their homes. Those boilers contribute more than a fifth of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions in the process. Many have warned that the dominance of the humble gas boiler threatens to derail global climate targets, while keeping Europe reliant on gas imports and shackled to higher energy costs. On Friday 9 September 2022, Jean-Luc Godard had one last wish. He needed a quote from Jean-Paul Sartre to complete his film, Scénarios, but the book was missing from the shelf in his Swiss home. Since its inception, the international criminal court (ICC) has charged 50 people, 47 of whom were African. Its investigations have also been overwhelmingly focused on war crimes and crimes against humanity in African nations. The young are more anti-immigration than older generations in some parts of Europe, Guardian analysis has found, as attitudes to migration harden in mainland Europe ahead of EU elections in June. Analysis of pan-EU polling reveals that in some countries, typically those in eastern Europe, negative attitudes to immigration are now more commonly held by gen Z or millennials than gen X or baby boomers. Elections are a choice about the future, they say. We should look forward, not back, they say. And most of the time, that’s true. But every now and then we should make an exception – and this is one of those times. Because the coming general election must also be about the past. POST OFFICE Hundreds of Horizon victims to be exonerated Hundreds of post office operators convicted on charges including false accounting, theft and fraud are to be exonerated by an unprecedented act of parliament. Over two decades, branch operators were hounded for money, jailed and even pushed to suicide by the actions of the Post Office. The act overturns convictions of theft, fraud, false accounting, money laundering and linked offences related to the Horizon IT scandal. The bill covers prosecutions brought by the Post Office and the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales for offences committed between 23 September 1996 and 31 December 2018. Similar legislation has been tabled in Scotland but there is no timetable yet for it to be passed. There have been more than 900 convictions linked…

Can a single insect reshape history? A queen hornet from the Vespa velutina species, which is believed to have stowed away in Chinese pottery, could make that claim. She was shipped to the port of Bordeaux in 2004. Having already mated with multiple males, she flew off into the sunshine of southwest France and built a nest. From that single nest, up to 500 new queens could have emerged. For a few years, her offspring quietly prospered. The Ahu Tahai moai, on the east side of Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is an impressive 4.5 metres high. Carved from a soft volcanic rock, the statue looks out solemnly over the island, with its back to the bay. The Tahai (“where the sun sets”) and the island’s other thousand or so moai were erected roughly between the years 1100 and 1700 as a representation of Rapa Nui’s ancestors. An archbishop of Canterbury in the 18th century approved payments for the purchase of enslaved people for two sugar plantations in Barbados, documents seen by the Observer have revealed. Thomas Secker agreed to reimburse a payment for £1,093 for the purchase of enslaved people on the Codrington Plantations, as well as hiring enslaved people from a third party. The measures were “calculated for the future lasting advantages of the estates”. The papers are among a cache of documents in the archives of Lambeth Palace Library in London, which detail the direct links between the Church of England and chattel slavery on plantations owned by its missionary arm, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG). Before the World Health Organization had coined the term Covid-19, it was the “Wuhan virus”, a mysterious pathogen from a city that few people outside China had visited.
