A local law says that residents of Saginaw Township in Michigan cannot publicly display political signs in support of a presidential candidate until 30 days before the US election, even on their own front lawns. The US homeland security adviser, Liz Sherwood-Randall, said on Monday that there could be as many as 600 deaths, though the figure was unconfirmed at that time. More than 1 million Americans were still without power in the Carolinas and Georgia as of Monday morning. The Biden administration pledged federal assistance for the recovery effort across several states. Helene made landfall last Thursday night in Florida’s Big Bend region as a category 4 hurricane. Aisha had wanted to stay with her husband when the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) laid siege to the Sudanese city of El Fasher earlier this year. In the early 1920s, the British countryside was a place where blackbirds sang, rabbits scurried and the summer skies were animated by swallows and house martins. A century on, blackbirds still sing and ancient oaks stand proud but the landscape is dominated by sheep, cows and dogs – according to Guardian country diarists. For more than a century, the bones of sailors who joined polar explorer Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated Northwest Passage expedition lay scattered on the rocky shores of an Arctic island. Weatherbeaten and bleached, nearly a quarter of the anonymous remains bore the marks of cannibalism, reflecting a grim coda to the expedition. Now, one of those men has been identified as Capt James Fitzjames from London, a discovery stemming from years of study by researchers at two Canadian universities, who isolated his DNA from a single molar and traced it to living relatives. Russia is a “mafia state” trying to expand into a “mafia empire”, the UK foreign secretary, David Lammy, told the UN, nailing the dual nature of Vladimir Putin’s political model. On one hand Russia represents something very old – a world of bullying empires that invade smaller countries, grab their resources and indoctrinate their people into thinking they are inferior. LABOUR MP resigns citing ‘cruel policies’ and ‘sleaze’ In a furious letter, Labour MP Rosie Duffield resigned from the parliamentary party after criticising Keir Starmer’s “cruel and unnecessary” policies and lambasting the prime minister’s “managerial and technocratic approach” to politics. The Canterbury MP, said the row over freebies handed to Starmer and his top team demonstrated that “sleaze, nepotism and apparent avarice are off the scale”. It is thought that it is the fastest an MP has given up their party’s whip after an election in modern times. A common defence of Israel’s belligerence, within the Palestinian territories and in the wider region, is that it must act this way because it is surrounded by countries that are trying to annihilate it. Like many arguments that attempt to justify Israel’s disproportionate response to 7 October, it is not only incorrect but also an inversion of reality. Cabinet ministers are demanding a rapid shake-up of Keir Starmer’s Downing Street operation, which they say has failed to spot obvious political banana skins, indulged post-election infighting and been unable to promote a sufficiently positive story of Labour’s mission in government. Some senior figures in Starmer’s team want the prime minister to bring in Jonathan Ashworth, the former frontbencher who was a regular and, many believe, effective media performer during the general election campaign, to beef up the team and give it a sharper political edge. On 4 September, an asteroid was spotted curving towards Earth. Astronomers quickly established that it would impact the planet in 10 hours’ time. The Philippines island of Luzon was in the line of fire, and there was nothing they could do about it but watch. I live in northern Slovenia, in the medieval town of Kamnik. This town lends its name to one of the three Alpine ranges that overlook the territory of Slovenia, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. They might not have the country’s highest peaks, but they are imposing. For my entire life, I have been looking at one of their most distinguishing features, the Kamnik Saddle, from the village where I grew up or from Ljubljana where I lived for a couple of years. Nintendo was founded in 1889 in Kyoto, 100 years before the release of the Game Boy. Long before it was a video game company, it made toys and hanafuda cards adorned with scenes from nature, used to play several games popular in Japan. By 1969, Nintendo had expanded its business to include western-style playing cards, and the company built a plant to manufacture them in southern Kyoto. Until 2016, the Uji Ogura plant was a card factory and repairs centre for the company’s consoles. It has been turned into a Nintendo Museum, which opened this week.
