South Africa has a tight regime for scientists wanting to “overwinter” in Antarctica. The 13-month assignment to an isolated research base on the top of a cliff edge is, as the environment ministry drily put it, “testing”. Average annual temperatures are -16C but drop much lower during the winter darkness. Since the big bang, a cosmic battle has been under way between matter (both dark matter and ordinary) and dark energy. The gravitational force that draws massive objects such as galaxies towards each other works against the expansion of the universe. But astronomical observations show that the universe’s expansion has, oddly, been speeding up. This led scientists to conclude that dark energy, a mysterious force acting as a sort of anti-gravity, permeates the entirety of space. And dark energy appeared to be at a significant advantage in the cosmic tug of war. As space expands, matter becomes more spread out, so its influence weakens. In grocery stores across the US, egg shelves sitting empty and desolate have become a sign of the times. A surging bird flu outbreak affected nearly 19m birds in January alone, wiping out supply and sending prices soaring. Officials forecast a 41% increase in egg prices this year in what some are calling “eggflation”. Where eggs are available, consumers are often limited in the number they can purchase at a time. Breakfast chains from Waffle House to Denny’s have added a surcharge of $0.50 per egg on their dishes. The egg-straordinary situation is driving some people to new places to source their eggs: over the southern border. As wealthy but lightly defended countries have often learned, being close to a much more powerful state – geographically or diplomatically – can be a precarious existence. Five years ago a $250m remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney’s first full-length animated feature film, must have seemed like a fine idea to corporate executives, who were going all out on remaking the studio’s dated classics into contemporary live-action movies. A storyteller of understated brilliance, Abdulrazak Gurnah was awarded the 2021 Nobel prize in literature. Born in Zanzibar, Gurnah, now 76, moved to Britain in 1968 as a refugee of the Zanzibar revolution. His books often feature people who leave what they know and arrive “in strange places, carrying little bits of jumbled luggage and suppressing secret and garbled ambitions”, to use the words of a character from his 2001 novel By the Sea. Theft, Gurnah’s first book since his Nobel win, is in part a continued inquiry into familiar themes of exile and memory, home, longing and loneliness. It is also a poignant portrait of love, friendship and betrayal, set against Tanzania’s tourism boom during the 1990s. 1 UKRAINE Limited ceasefire talks bring hope of lasting peace US and Russian officials held talks in Saudi Arabia this week as Donald Trump pushed to broker a limited ceasefire that Washington hopes will mark the first step toward lasting peace. On Tuesday Russia said it was considering the results of the talks and that the details would remain private. According to Agence France-Presse, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said delegates had reported back to Moscow and the results were “being analysed”, adding that contact with Washington would continue but there was no “specific” date on the next meeting. “The content of these talks will definitely not be made public,” Peskov said. Ukraine and Russia agreed in principle to a one-month halt on strikes on energy infrastructure earlier this month, but…

If Europe wasn’t already on notice, the extraordinary leak of deliberations by JD Vance and other top-level Trump administration officials over a strike against the Houthis in Yemen was another sign that it has a target on its back. The officials gave Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic a front-row seat to the planning for the strike against the Houthis – a stunning intelligence leak that has caused anger against Republicans who called for criminal investigations against Hillary Clinton and others for playing fast and loose with sensitive information. As Britain’s biggest airport, Europe’s main gateway to the Americas, and the apple of Rachel Reeves’s eye for growth, Heathrow’s shutdown last Friday gave a supersized significance to a substation fire. Some were quick to question the creaking state of national infrastructure. Where were the backup systems – or indeed the further failsafes when the backups went up in smoke? Warrant officer Jim Davison had spent a full day travelling the sea ice off the coast of Baffin Island when his group decided to set up camp for the night. The Canadian soldier ran through a mental checklist of what was needed: shelter in the forest, wood for a fire and a source of fresh water. “I look around and I’m a kilometre offshore. In Washington, Donald Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center – the US’s imposing national centre for the performing arts – presents a bizarre, unnerving and, at times, bleakly comical spectacle. The sun is warm on my back. Above the hedge, a flash of yellow draws my gaze to a brimstone butterfly, resplendent in the morning light. For me, this little insect is the herald of spring proper, and I savour the joy of this sighting among the season’s first warm embrace. CIVIL SERVICE Government demands £2bn annual spending cuts The civil service was told to slash more than £2bn ($2. 6bn) a year from its budget by the end of the decade as part of the government’s spending review, with unions warning of significant job losses. The Cabinet Office will tell departments to cut their administrative budgets by 15%, which is expected to save £2.2bn a year by 2029-30. They will first be asked to reduce budgets by 10% by 2028-29 in a bid to save £1.5bn a year, which the head of the FDA union said equates to nearly 10% of the salary bill for the civil service. Administrative budgets include HR, policy advice and office management rather than frontline services. Departments were expected to receive instructions in a letter…

A friend had gone missing. Nothing unusual in Sudan’s ruinous war, but Hitham Mohund knew it was vital to act quickly. However, in an abandoned home near the Nile River he stopped searching after making a grisly discovery: wedged inside a bathroom were three bodies. Hands tied, eyes staring upwards. “They were shot in the chest,” said the 28-year-old, as he walked towards Maigoma Street, a dusty thoroughfare in north Khartoum, Sudan’s capital. The face of protest Police officers use pepper spray on a demonstrator wearing dervish clothes during a protest in Istanbul last Sunday against the arrest of the city’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, on corruption charges. On Monday, Turkish authorities had arrested more than 1,100 people including journalists, while bombarding the social media platform X with requests to block hundreds of accounts after tens of thousands took to the streets. One journalist was detained while covering demonstrations that took place outside Istanbul city hall, while nine others were detained in dawn raids. İmamoğlu was arrested and sent to a high-security prison, on the same day he was named as the opposition’s candidate for president. Apipeline company’s victory in court over Greenpeace, and the huge damages it now faces, will encourage other oil and gas companies to pursue environmental protesters at a time when Donald Trump’s energy agenda is in ascendancy, experts have warned. On 19 March a North Dakota jury ruled that three Greenpeace entities must pay Energy Transfer, which was co-founded by a prominent Trump donor, more than $660m. In 1999, Ras Paul, a west London DJ born to Jamaican parents, sold part of his vinyl collection to buy a plot of land and build a house in Shashamene, 200km south of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Seven years earlier, he had become a Rastafarian, around the time of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, whom the religion reveres as the Messiah. “As an Ethiopian descendant, I wanted to come home,” he said. “It’s the place I felt I belong.” Paul was not alone. What’s the best way to cook frozen seafood, and do you have to treat it differently from fresh?
