Turkey’s antigovernment protesters were this week weighing their options, amid calls by the main opposition leader for weekly rallies, a growing economic boycott and a groundswell of fired-up student demonstrators determined to stay on the streets. The leader of the Republican People’s party (CHP), Özgür Özel, expanded a call to boycott goods and services from companies perceived as close to the president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during a rally in support of the jailed Istanbul mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu. No one knows how Kamran Hasan became a militant. The history-loving 23-year-old had returned home from Islamabad, where he worked as a chartered accountant, and had his hopes set on a degree in education. But then in June, he disappeared. A brief phone call to his father came days later. “He told me, ‘I am going to the mountains,’” said his father, Mohammad Akram, who knew that meant only one thing: his son was joining the militant insurgency that had rocked their home region of Balochistan for decades. “I begged him no, asked if it was reasons of money or family that led him to take this step. The Burmese painter Htein Lin’s art bears the imprint of his years in a Myanmar jail, where he created hundreds of paintings using prison uniforms as his canvases and makeshift tools including syringes, soap blocks and cigarette lighters. “I had no canvas, no brushes, no paint. But I had to make art,” said Htein Lin from his home in Myanmar’s Shan state. “I befriended the prison guards to smuggle in paint, scavenging for materials wherever I could. ” Htein Lin’s first full retrospective, Escape, at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery, centres on a series of prison paintings, 000235, named after the number assigned to him by the International Committee of the Red Cross during his incarceration in Myanmar from 1998 to 2004. There were cries of joy in progressive parts of Rio last Wednesday as Brazil’s supreme court ruled that former president Jair Bolsonaro should stand trial for an alleged coup plot. “No amnesty! No amnesty!” one elated lefty roared from his balcony into the sunny autumn afternoon. So much so that her play 1536 pivots around the last days of Anne Boleyn, the second wife. Pickett’s history lessons covered Boleyn’s rise – a passion so great the king bent laws to marry her – as well as the torrid details of her downfall and beheading. Since the arrest last month of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s main political rival, Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, on what are clearly trumped-up charges of corruption and terrorism, Taksim Square, the city’s biggest tourist site and hub of political protest, has been lying empty, cordoned off by police. In my 50 years living in Istanbul, I have not seen as many so-called security measures on the streets as I have over the past few days. Taksim’s metro station and many of the city’s other busiest stations have been closed. The regional government has restricted car and intercity bus access to Istanbul. Donald Trump won back the White House with a promise to transform the US economy. Millions of Americans, struggling with higher prices and bigger bills, elected a president who pledged to revive his country’s industrial heartlands – and leave the world to pick up the bill. It is hard to describe the putrid stench of the decaying sargassum seaweed blanketing miles of shoreline in Soubise, a fishing village in Grenada. The pungent odour wafts into passing vehicles, persisting long after they have left the Caribbean island’s coves, where the ocean has deposited masses of the seaweed, which turns red then black as it rots. The “Signalgate” scandal has confirmed what Europeans already knew. The Trump administration’s disdain for Europe is deep and the transatlantic fracture is structural. While our leaders publicly play down the significance of the unravelling that is manifestly under way, few actually sound as convinced in private. Hopes persist that Europe can prevent the most extreme manifestation of the collapse in the relationship, be it an invasion of Greenland, the withdrawal of US forces from Europe’s Nato member states or an all-out trade war. ‘Part of the Frick’s appeal is that it is a great museum that hardly feels like a museum at all. It has the feeling of being someone’s home, its contents selected by a singular eye. That’s because it was and they were. Both home and eye belonged to one man, the Pennsylvania-born coke and steel magnate Henry Clay Frick. The collection has doubled in size since his death in 1919. The building, which remained the family home until 1931, was enlarged to convert it into a museum that opened in 1935. It might seem unfathomable to us now, but F Scott Fitzgerald’s third novel was something of a let-down when it was published 100 years ago; his previous books, This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and Damned – there had also been a novella, The Diamond As Big As the Ritz, and short stories including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – had been more commercially successful and found greater favour with critics. I sit in my front garden, which is surely a contender for the world’s smallest meadow – a tiny square, rich with native grasses, primroses, lungwort, crocuses and the last of the snowdrops. ECONOMY Ministers fear for possible impact of Trump tariffs Ministers were braced this week for the impact of likely tariffs on the UK as part of Donald Trump’s latest round of trade barriers. The stakes for the government are high – forecasters have said a 20 percentage point increase on tariffs on UK goods and services would cut the size of the British economy by 1% and force the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, into tax rises this autumn. Even before the US president announced the measures, senior government figures said Labour may have to target pensioners and wealthier taxpayers at the autumn budget. WHEN 21-YEAR-OLD BERKAY GEZGIN left the interior of Istanbul city hall, a squad of police was waiting for him outside. Protests that flooded the streets outside the headquarters of his political hero, detained mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, had begun trickling away by midnight, but hundreds of riot police remained clustered around the municipality building. Supporters of the climate group Just Stop Oil have announced that, after three years of disruptive protests, they are ending their campaign of civil resistance. I grew up in a predominantly white Christian community in Sydney’s western suburbs. I was a pretty traumatised, messed-up kid. I had a lot of anger, mostly towards the people closest to me, but because I couldn’t do anything about that I just went around with a lot of rage that I had no way of getting rid of. A family member had a hatred of “Asians” because of the second world war. My grandfather also hated “Asians”, and said things like “make sure you lock your doors” and “you can’t trust them”.
