Three years after the British journalist Dom Phillips and the Brazilian activist Bruno Pereira were murdered in the Amazon, two major new projects will celebrate their lives and work – and the Indigenous communities and rainforests both men sought to protect. Friends of Phillips have completed the book he was writing at the time of his death – How to Save the Amazon – which was published in the UK, the US and Brazil last month. The book aims to highlight solutions for preserving the world’s largest tropical rainforest, focusing on the experiences of its Indigenous peoples and other inhabitants. Outside the federal courthouse complex in downtown Los Angeles on Monday morning, two cleaners carrying bins on wheels looked uncertainly at the daunting task in front of them – long walls in several directions covered in spray-painted graffiti after a weekend of vigorous street protest. Hours before the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, delivered her budget last year, government officials were still in tense negotiations with BBC bosses over how much the World Service would be given. The amount they were haggling over was relatively small – just £5.5m ($7.5m) out of a total budget of £400m. But BBC chiefs warned the government that if the cuts were imposed on them, they would have to close several language stations in parts of the world where the Russians already hold influence. The BBC got the extra cash it was asking for. Just across the bay there’s a decommissioned North Sea oil platform, sawn off at the knees and propped up in the scrapyard of Able Seaton Port to decay in the sun and salt air. Smoke from wildfires in Canada has been spreading across multiple states in the US, including the eastern seaboard, prompting air-quality alerts. The fires, which have been sparked by both human and natural causes, have prompted thousands of residents in three Canadian provinces to evacuate since fires broke out last month. Last week, a map from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s AirNow forecast showed large swathes of moderate to unhealthy air quality across the east, midwest and southern parts of the US, featuring smoke and dust. At 5.30am last Tuesday, six immigration enforcement officers and journalists gathered in a deserted car park near Sheffield’s railway station, waiting in the rain for a call from London that would trigger simultaneous arrests of suspected people-smugglers in six towns. On a clear day at Plymouth marina you can see across the harbour out past Drake’s Island – named after the city’s most famous son, Francis Drake – to the Channel. It’s quite often possible to see an abundance of marine vessels, from navy ships and passenger ferries to small fishing boats and yachts. What you might not spot from this distance is a large yellow buoy bobbing up and down in the water 10km off the coast. His YouTube channel, to which he posts his increasingly elaborate and expensively produced videos, has 400 million subscribers – equivalent to the total number of native English speakers currently alive. What’s the trick to great coleslaw?  Chris, Paignton, England, UK “Coleslaw is such an underrated salad,” says the Guardian’s Felicity Cloake. “Familiarity breeds contempt.” (As do those claggy tubs you get in supermarkets.) For much of the past century, life expectancy continually increased. In most countries in the world, children could hope to live, on average, longer, healthier lives than their parents. This expectation is still true of the megawealthy. In fact, tech billionaires and multimillionaires have recently been fixated on finding the secret to longer life, convinced that with enough money, technology and cutting-edge science, they can stave off the inevitable for a few more decades to reach 120 or even 150 years old.
