Europe needs to “get serious” about the existential threat posed by Russia, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister, Sergiy Kyslytsya, has said in an interview with the Guardian, warning that the Kremlin was already at war with Europe. He said Russia’s recent drone incursions against several EU countries were well calculated and an attempt to “move the red lines”. “I’m sure Putin gets emotional if not physical satisfaction humiliating the west by showing what he perceives as his super-strength,” Kyslytsya said, adding that the Russian president’s reckless actions risked antagonising a White House that appeared to be cooling on him. I have no trouble falling asleep. Most nights my head hits the pillow, and that’s all I remember. But a few times a week, I find myself wide awake at 2am – stressing about a work deadline, wondering if my daughter is adjusting to her new school, or making a note on my phone to get the car washed. Usually I get back to sleep in an hour, but when my 8am alarm goes off, I feel groggy, wishing I’d had that extra shut-eye. A mid a boom in Irish culture across music, literature, film and fashion, the Irish language – Gaeilge – is also experiencing a revival. Once the majority’s native tongue, it was assailed and diminished as a daily, working, spoken language under British colonialism and became largely confined to rural west coast districts for much of the 20th century, kept alive by generations of families. But over recent decades the number of schools teaching the national curriculum exclusively through Irish has risen from fewer than 20 in the 1970s, to more than 200 today. The 2022 census showed a 6% increase in the number of people able to speak Irish compared with 2016. Irish is a core subject on the curriculum and compulsory in all schools. When a person unknown daubed a flag of Saint George over the town’s new riverside mural last month, it was quickly overwritten with a diagonal cross and the words “Frome says no to fascism. 1 FRANCE Political crisis deepens as latest PM resigns Hours after France’s new prime minister resigned less than a month after he was appointed, Emmanuel Macron asked him to stay on for two more days in a last-ditch effort to chart a way out of the country’s rapidly deepening political crisis. The French president on Monday evening gave Sébastien Lecornu – who had earlier become the third prime minister to quit in a year – 48 hours to “conduct final negotiations … to define a platform for action and stability”. When Arij al-Farra heard that Hamas had partially agreed to Donald Trump’s plan and that the US president had ordered Israel to stop bombing Gaza, the first thing she felt was hope. The second thing she felt was an explosion. An Israeli aircraft had dropped a bomb close to her tent in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. “I feel like we are in a trap. When candidates for the leadership of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic party (LDP) were invited during a debate to say a few words in English, Sanae Takaichi kept her contribution brief. “Japan is back,” she declared. But her victory last Saturday also signals the arrival of a different Japan: eight decades after the end of the second world war, the country is about to get its first female prime minister. World leaders, friends and former colleagues have paid tribute to the primatologist Jane Goodall. She devoted her life to studying chimpanzees and other great apes, and became a global champion for primates and for conservation, helping to challenge the idea that primates were vegetarian and that only humans could use tools. She died while on a speaking tour in the US, prompting dedications from around the world. “Jane Goodall had a remarkable ability to inspire us to connect with the natural wonders of our world, and her groundbreaking work on primates and the importance of conservation opened doors for generations of women in science,” said the former US president Barack Obama. From the tea houses of the ancient town of Casbah to the lemonade stalls in the Roman ruins of Tipaza and the fashion stores of downtown Algiers, cash remains king in and around the capital of Africa’s thirdlargest economy. Party conference time is when British politics goes berserk. Leaders soar and crash in a morass of cliches. Polls go mad and cataclysm always delivers the best copy. Thus, back in 1981, Margaret Thatcher was at her Blackpool conference, two years into office. Brixton was rioting, inflation was 11% and the Tories were polling at 23%. The Labour opposition was faring as badly, also at 23%. PROTEST Alarm over plan to increase police anti-protest powers Civil liberty groups expressed concern over government plans to hand police greater powers to restrict protests as organisers of mass demonstrations against the banning of the Palestine Action organisation pledged a “major escalation” of their campaign. The home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said last Sunday that repeated large-scale demonstrations over Gaza had caused “considerable fear” for the Jewish community in the wake of a fatal terror attack on a Manchester synagogue last week. Sister Bernadette recalls how she once struggled to wake her pupils at the Goldenstein convent boarding school. “They would plead with me: ‘Just five more minutes’ snooze, Berna,’” she chuckled. Dame Sarah Mullally, 63, who has been named as the 106th archbishop of Canterbury, has been described as a “theological liberal” who will ordain men and women to the priesthood, but also supports the inclusion of those who reject the ordination of women. If I had to pick a specialist subject, it would be The Simpsons. I reference it incessantly. I annoy my friends and loved ones by reciting lines as they play out on the TV. I love The Simpsons. It’s also the worst thing on television. Revealing yourself as a Simpsons fan comes with inevitable qualifiers: “Not the new episodes!” Most people want their favourite show to last as long as miserly TV executives will allow. Not me. There is a stubborn and widely held idea that in some earlier phase of our species’ existence, women had equal status to men, or even ruled, and societies were happier and more peaceful for it. Then along came the patriarchy, and much bloodshed and oppression later, here we all are. This notion of matriarchy and patriarchy as polar opposites was seeded in the 19th century by Marxist theory, taking root in archaeology without much evidence. Anthropologists tended to be more sceptical. They saw plenty of diversity in gender relations across human societies, both modern and historical, and some of them suspected that diversity was the rule in prehistory, too.
