When the Gaza ceasefire took effect this month, tens of thousands of Palestinians began to move from the sprawling camps in the south back to their homes in Gaza City and the surrounding area. For most, it was a shocking and bitter homecoming. A month after they had been ordered out by Israeli forces, Palestinians filled the coastal road north. It soon became a solid river of people carrying the few possessions they had salvaged from one displacement after another. What the returnees found on arrival was complete desolation. Large swathes of the north had simply been flattened. Their homes and neighbourhoods were no longer recognisable. Their communities had been erased. The sheer scale of demolition left families with an awful dilemma: stay and seek shelter in the shattered stumps…

The Prince of Wales, whom Buckingham Palace has said was “consulted” before Prince Andrew’s dramatic statement, must have felt some relief at his uncle agreeing to relinquish use of his titles and honours. At some point William will become king. His uncle, 12 years younger than King Charles, may well be watching when he takes his coronation oath. Walking through the centre of Tenbury Wells is like stepping into a postcard. The independent shops are painted in cheerful colours and flowers spill out of planters. Bunting festoons the lampposts, and the pubs are full, their steamed-up windows glowing orange. You would not know that just a few months ago, the Worcestershire town was a wreck, destroyed by flood water, with windows smashed and shops gutted. The inhabitants have worked hard to make it pristine again. But speak to those who own the shops and you see the misery through the stiff upper lips. After graphene was first produced at the University of Manchester in 2004, it was hailed as a wonder material, stronger than steel but lighter than paper. But two decades on, not every UK graphene company has made the most of that potential. Some show promise but others are struggling. Extracted from graphite, commonly used in pencils, graphene is a latticed sheet of carbon one atom thick, and is highly effective at conducting heat and electricity. China is the world’s biggest producer, using it to try to get ahead in the global race to produce microchips and in sectors such as construction. Come what may, Jean Nouvel will always have Paris. The City of Lights has been the stage and stomping ground of French architecture’s vieux terrible since the early 1980s. Yet the building that first made his name – the Institut du Monde Arabe, a glittering, delicate, metallic creation inset with mechanical lenses to regulate light – is a lifetime away from the bemusement that met his last Parisian project, completed a decade ago. When researchers asked people around the world to list every taboo word they could think of, the differences that emerged were revealing. The length of each list, for example, varied widely; while native English speakers in the UK and Spanish speakers in Spain rattled off an average of 16 words, Germans more than tripled this with an average of 53 words ranging from intelligenzallergiker, a person allergic to intelligence, to hodenkobold, or testicle goblin, used to refer to someone who is being annoying. The demands grow more punitive and absurd, like the whiteboard of a meeting where everyone agreed there were no bad ideas. Voluntary work! A decade to receive citizenship! The fields are gently busy with horses and tractors, working at a steady pace, all competing in categories from hand-trip reversible ploughing and two-wheeled garden tractors to a fascinating heritage technique called the high-cut method. PRINCE ANDREW Ministers under pressure to act over Prince Andrew MPs moved to lodge a parliamentary motion to strip Prince Andrew of his dukedom, in a rarely permitted move in the Commons. The government is facing mounting pressure over the prince’s residence in the 30-room Royal Lodge in Windsor (above), where it was revealed that he has not paid rent for more than two decades. The UK business secretary, Peter Kyle, said it was “a matter for the palace” whether Andrew was permitted to remain there after the fresh allegations made against him about his relationship with the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. As the sun set on Place du 13 Mai in Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, thousands of people danced, waved and cheered to pulsating rap and reggae beats and rousing speeches. When young people started protesting on 25 September, first against water and power cuts, then demanding a complete overhaul of the political system, military police stopped them from reaching the square. The site has been a symbol of democracy and the focal point of anti-government protests on the Indian Ocean island since 40 student demonstrators were killed there by security forces in May 1972. Mainstream parties are increasingly allowing the far right to set the agenda, researchers in Germany have found, unwittingly helping the far right by legitimising their ideas and disseminating them more widely. The findings, published in the European Journal of Political Research, were based on an automated text analysis of 520,408 articles from six German newspapers over the span of more than two decades. The researchers found that as the far right moved from fringe issues in the late 1990s to topics such as integration and migration, mainstream parties had reshaped their communications to respond, boosting the spread of these ideas and signalling to voters that these ideas and stances were legitimate. Mourning show Supporters of Kenya’s former prime minister Raila Odinga chant slogans and hold floral wreaths during his funeral in Bondo, near the opposition leader’s family farm close to Lake Victoria. In a corner of the new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa), visitors can marvel at a sample display of the cultural treasures that adorned the royal palace that once stood in its place: a proud cockerel, a plaque with three mighty warriors, a bust of a king with a glorious beaded collar. The artefacts, known as the Benin bronzes, were looted by British colonial forces in 1897. In the decades that followed they were scattered across collections in Europe and America. It is often difficult for people in India to remember life before Aadhaar. The digital biometric ID, allegedly available for every Indian citizen, was only introduced 15 years ago but its presence in daily life is ubiquitous. Indians need an Aadhaar number to buy a house, get a job, open a bank account, pay their tax, receive benefits, buy a car, get a sim card, book priority train tickets and get children into a school. Babies can be given Aadhaar numbers almost immediately after they are born. While it is not mandatory, not having Aadhaar de facto means the state does not recognise you exist, digital rights activists say. Donald Trump last Sunday accused Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, of being an “illegal drug dealer” and threatened to cut US funding to the country as a Republican senator said the US would soon announce “major tariffs” on the country. ‘You can expect all the usual excitement,” offered host Lauren Laverne at the start of this year’s Mercury prize ceremony. Whenever you read, watch or listen to the news, you’ re likely to be exposed to stories of violence and murder. As a criminal psychologist, I’m often asked to comment on these cases to pick apart the motives of the perpetrators. People want these insights because murders feel frightening and horrifying, but also oddly compelling. The way these crimes are covered profoundly influences our perception of what the most urgent problems facing society are. The world would be a very different place if environmental crimes were treated in the same way as murders. So, why aren’t they? At the moment such crimes can, mistakenly, feel distant and abstract.
