When the Model 700 was introduced by Remington in 1962, hardly anyone expected that it would dominate the rifle market for a half-century. The Winchester Model 70, in its pre-64 version, was the one that all other bolt actions were compared to at the time. The introduction of the 700 turned out to be good timing for Remington because, 2 years later, Winchester made many changes to the Model 70 that to this day make 1964 a turning point in rifle history. As is the case with most Winchester firearms, “pre-64” adds to the value. The 700 was the creation of the late Remington engineer Mike Walker, who died in 2013 at the age of 101. The .243 Winchester The .243 Winchester was introduced by Winchester in 1955 for its Model 70 bolt-action and Model 88 lever-action rifles. The .243 Win. was quickly adopted by Savage for its Model 99 lever- and Model 110 bolt-action rifles. All the British and European manufacturers soon began chambering bolt-action rifles for this round. What A Belt! On the cover of the June 2018 issue (Vol. 35, Issue 8), there appears a very well-made canvas cartridge belt, along with the replica Sharps. Can you tell me who made the cartridge belt and how might I purchase one? -John Herrick, via email Hey, John. When I was selecting the props for this particular cover shoot, I chose this specific belt because it’s an accurate reproduction of a military issue 1879 Prairie Belt, which pairs really well both historically and visually with that particular rifle being featured.
