Sure, the upcoming revolver issue and recently released concealed carry special issue take honorable mention awards, but I love this “Made in the USA” theme. Interestingly enough, the phrase “Made in the USA” isn’t as black and white as you might think. For example, from a manufacturing perspective, the FTC mandates that “all, or virtually all” significant parts and processes be made and assembled within our shores to allow manufacturers to wear the Made in the USA sticker on their packaging. The most effective use of a defensive handgun is obtained by the proper application of tactics and skill. Though they’re often confused by trainers and trainees, and even though you can be tactically skilled, skills and tactics are no the same thing. WHAT IS SKILL? A skill is the learned ability to perform an action well with determined results, often in a given amount of time. A perfect example of a skill would be the presentation of a handgun from the holster followed by a shot that strikes to the center mass of a perceived threat. Depending on distance, we could argue about how much time this should take before proficiency is achieved. Discontinued. That one word can throw a reloader into a state of mania, depression, anxiety, panic or any combination thereof. There have been a few instances in my time spent reloading that have caused me to adopt an alternative outlook toward reloading components—the Plan B, as I call it. I remember when it was announced that IMR 4320 rifle powder would be discontinued. It was like a gut punch because I was using it in three of my favorite rifles at the time. Springfield Armory released the Garrison 1911 in .45 ACP in late 2021, and since then the pistols have been regarded as a solid 1911 option that offers a good balance between features, quality and price. HISTORICAL NOTES Most shooting enthusiasts think that the .270 Weatherby was developed to satisfy a demand for this caliber after the popularity of the .300 Weatherby Magnum had been established. As a matter of fact, the .270 was the first of the line developed by Roy Weatherby on the necked-down .300 H&H case. This was in 1943, after experiments with an improved .220 Swift that Weatherby called the .220 Rocket. Your goal when using your revolver in a defensive encounter is to make the bad guy stop whatever it is that required you to shoot in the first place. To be clear: You want to stop the threat. Your goal isn’t to create a fatality—though that is a distinct possibility—but rather to cause the attacker to stop their actions. This stopping, or cessation of action, can be achieved through one of two mechanisms: psychological, where the attacker makes the decision that they don’t want to persist; or physiological, where the attacker’s body involuntarily stops functioning because of the damage the shot(s) inflict. It wasn’t all that long ago that a suppressor for a firearm was a rarity, and most shooters probably thought they were illegal. Back then, if you knew someone who owned a suppressor, you had friends in high places. This all began to change after SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ institute) approved the .300 Blackout cartridge in 2011. Since then, there’s been a suppressor revolution in the United States. The suppressor is an oddity when it comes to firearms laws and regulations. Even though a suppressor isn’t a firearm, it’s regulated. This regulation began with the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934.
