MY GUN COLLECTING MENTOR, whose name many of you would recognize, has a phrase he repeats now and then. “That’s an honest gun,” former Guns & Ammo columnist Ross Seyfried sometimes tells me. “Honest” means that the gun is not mint or unfired. An honest gun is unaltered and shows signs of normal use, but not abuse. Restored guns need not apply. Honest guns are what I look for when an auction catalog lands on my doorstep or arrives in my inbox. Sometimes they are relatively affordable, at least in context of fine looking guns. “It is a lovely rifle that I would be proud to have in my own collection.” MINTY EDDYSTONE MODEL 1917 I bought this Model 1917 rifle, s/n 580XXX, from a friend some years back. It’s been described to me as a “1914 Pattern Rifle,” and also an “American Enfield.” It’s chambered for .30-’06 and is reasonably accurate. My initial research revealed that it was built at the Eddystone Arsenal. What puzzles me is the overall condition of this rifle! For a military firearm that’s more than 100 years old, I would expect to see more wear and handling marks. Except for some expected wear on the surfaces of the bolt, other metal surfaces on the barrel and receiver are excellent and all markings are sharp and clear. The only wear…

NATE BEARD AND NATE JOHNSON of Lexington, North Carolina, had been in the holster business since 2009. Together, they became N82 Tactical (spoken “Nate-squared”). Like many entrepreneurs, they started a business when they couldn’t find the product they wanted. Most cheap holsters are not American made and use hard plastics and thick cowhide, making them bulky and uncomfortable to wear. Their first prototype was created using neoprene and material from Under Armour clothing, and further experimenting continued for months. The Original inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster combined an elastic pocket, suede, smooth leather and the same neoprene used in manufacturing diving suits.
