Stocked C.93 Borchardt Pistol A scarce and desirable 7.65x25mm C.93 Borchardt semiautomatic pistol by Ludwig Loewe & Co., complete with shoulder stock, realized an impressive $20,910, including premiums, at the November 18, 2020, Morphy Auctions sale. The pistol, one of 1,100 produced by Loewe, is among the earliest successful semiauto pistols to be marketed. Condition of the gun is 65 percent. It is accompanied by an original and rare shoulder stock, though the serial numbers on the gun and stock do not match. As well, the pistol retains its 95 percent condition, nickel-plated, eight-round magazine. This is a superb acquisition for the semiautomatic pistol collector. The price? CZ spent 1,098,620 shares of CZG common stock and $220 million, which rendered Colt debt free. All the while, Colt is still manufacturing firearms. CZG is one of the leading producers of firearms in Europe and sells its products through subsidiaries that include CZ-USA, Dan Wesson, Brno Rifles and 4M Systems. Walnut and Steel II by Bill Ward, Palmetto Publishing Group, Charleston, SC, 2018; paperback, 278 pages. In 2016, G&A reviewed Bill Ward’s premier effort, “Walnut and Steel,” an authoritative and almost loving tribute to vintage .22 rifles. I thoroughly enjoyed the work, and am now pleased to report that the author has come out with another detailed second volume, which covers an even wider variety of .22 rimfire long guns chosen from a large selection of makers. In his introduction, Ward claims this is not exactly a collector’s book, but I might beg to differ. 1943 SPANISH MAUSER Q: Can you give me some information about this straight-handled Mauser? I bought it when I first went to college in 1969 from a military surplus dealer in Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m most interested in what information can be gleaned from the coat of arms stamped on the receiver, and the date that it was manufactured. I originally thought the date stamp behind the crest read “1944”. With the aid of younger eyes and magnification, we can only distinguish “19”, which is stamped deeply and followed by no other distinguishing number or markings.
