CZ’S RIMFIRE RIFLE CONTINUES TO EVOLVE with the creation of the CZ 457 in 2019. The CZ 457 Match Target Rifle (MTR) came along in 2020 and used a match chamber cut to minimum dimensions per Commission internationale permanente (CIP). (CIP is the European equivalent to the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, or SAAMI.) Tighter chambers are critical in rimfire rifles to produce accuracy, so this is the tightest standard chamber a manufacturer can put in a rifle. One of CZ’s newest 457 models, and the subject of this review, is the Long Range Precision (LRP) model. Author J. B. Wood sparked controversy among G&A readers with “That Damned Garand!” Recalling soldiers’ stories of enemy troops in Korea waiting to attack until the twang of ejected clips from Garands, Wood wrote, “A list of the Garand’s good points should take no more than a single paragraph … Listing the rifle’s unfavorable factors will take a bit more space.” The reader blowback was so overwhelming that a counterpoint article was published a few issues later: “That Damned Good Garand!”…

A rare, documented Colt Model 1907 in .45 ACP realized an impressive $22,240, including premiums, at the April 27, 2021, Morphy Auctions. The pistol, one of only 200 used for U.S. military test trials, was in very good condition, retaining a reasonable degree of original finish mixed with a gunmetal gray and brown patina. Grips are of checkered walnut and show some wear. This pistol, which was a precursor to the Colt Model 1911, while predicting some of the latter’s general appearance, did have some mechanical problems that included going full-auto due to sear breaks and extraction difficulties. Colt attempted to rectify the problems and resubmit the arm for further testing, but this pistol was not among those resubmitted. Instead, it was shipped to dealer Francis Bannerman in 1912. It…

ON MAY 24, 2021, the Texas Legislature sent House Bill 1927 to Gov. Greg Abbott who pledged to sign it. When the bill goes into effect, it will make Texas the latest of 21 states that allow firearms to be carried without a government-issued permit. Permitless or “constitutional carry” is not new, but, until recent years, it was relatively rare. That is changing fast. In 1903, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that requiring a permit to carry a firearm was “inconsistent with and repugnant to the Constitution and the laws of the state,” thus establishing permitless carry in the Green Mountain State. For the remainder of the 20th century, permitless carry was universally known as “Vermont-style carry.” Vermont stood alone until 2003 when Alaska abandoned its permit requirement by legislative…

WHAT YOU SEE within Guns & Ammo was not created unintentionally. Within a few issues of being selected as this publication’s 14th editor, Art Director Michael Ulrich and I worked together to update the magazine’s appearance and reorganize its columns and features. We surveyed a focus group of gun enthusiasts ranging in age and background before selecting details such as the font families and sizes, as well as colors within the spectrum that we knew our printers could accurately reproduce. Though G&A hasn’t had a significant redesign since the April 2014 issue, we still tweak design templates, layouts and our editorial processes to improve readability and familiarity. “The Complete Book of Tokarev Pistols” by Cameron S. White; Mobray Publishing, Woonsocket, RI; 224 pages; softcover In the 1920s, Soviet authorities recognized that a more modern pistol was needed to replace the Czarst-period Model 1891 Nagant revolver. Invention, testing and modifications resulted in the excellent TT-30 and TT-33 Tokarev pistols. Chambered in a 7.62x25mm round, similar to that used in the C.96 “Broomhandle” Mauser, the Tokarev saw widespread use and manufacture in Communist-bloc countries from the 1930s well into the Cold War era — and beyond. REMINGTON REINTRODUCED its Premier Scirocco Bonded (RPSB) line of ammunition in late 2018. As a result of Remington’s bankruptcy and subsequent division, the ammunition operations are now owned by Vista Outdoors — the same parent company as Federal Ammunition. RPSB loads continue to be produced. Loaded with Swift’s Scirocco bullets, which were introduced in 1999, this ammunition still offers big-game hunters dependable performance today. Before we discuss RPSB ammunition, I’d like to offer my views of what constitutes so-called “premium” ammunition. First, I don’t put a lot of stock in the cosmetic treatments often applied to “premium” ammunition. I have never seen compelling evidence that bullet coatings actually benefit performance or offer meaningful barrel fouling reduction. Nickel-plated cases offer some corrosion resistance and possibly easier extraction, but those aren’t usually…
