ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL and unforgettable articles that I’ve read appeared in the September 1991 issue of Guns & Ammo. The feature was titled “Hits at A Half Mile and Beyond,” written by Ross Seyfried. He wrote feature articles and a Q&A column for Shooting Times from 1989 to 1993, and he was 37 when he penned his first back-page colum n for Guns & Ammo, “Down on the Border,” in January 1998. JAPANESE MATCHLOCK Q: The attached photos are of a matchlock that has been in my family since the 1960s. My dad’s brother-in-law gave it to him. Then, Dad gave it to me nearly 50 years ago. IT USED TO BE EASY to look at a scope sitting on the shelf and know its intended role. Hunters wanted simplicity and relatively low magnification, while target and tactical shooters wanted higher magnification, an exposed elevation turret, and a handful of other features. Thanks to the simultaneous proliferation of precision-rifle shooting sports and hunting, scopes are available that have features appropriate for both applications.
