THERMAL INERTIA In “Gun Tech” (May 2025), Richard Nance used a barrel supplied by Avient featuring a ceramic material in the middle designed “to quickly transfer heat from the steel bore.” However, he didn’t say where the heat goes. It seems that the only place for the heat to go is into the carbon-fiber layer. Since carbon-fiber has only about half the thermal conductivity of steel [.17 to 27 W/(m x K) versus 45 to 60 W/(m x K)], and considerably lower density — thus reduced thermal mass and reduced weight of the layered barrel — it follows that the steel liner in the layered barrel would get hotter compared to an all-steel barrel of similar profile. THE IMPETUS FOR THIS COLUMN followed a discussion concerning my review of the Rost Martin RM1S in Guns & Ammo (April 2025). The RM1S includes one flush 12-round magazine and one extended 15 rounder. In that article, I mentioned how the extended magazine provided more control because I could get my entire hand around the grip. The only downside was that the longer mag was tougher to conceal for carry. I preferred shooting the RM1S with the extended magazine in place, but that’s not surprising. THERE IS A VAST AMOUNT OF INFORMATION available on smokeless powders, including burn rate charts, reloading manuals, and propellant profiles by experts such as Ken Waters. Just about anything a shooter or reloader might want to know about propellants — relative speed, appropriate cartridge use, performance for uniformity and accuracy — is all well documented. ELABORATE 1911 Q: I inherited this 1911 .45 ACP from my father in 1990 and was hoping you could give me some information. The only marking on the pistol is the serial number, 144XXX. My father told me it is a Llama, and he acquired it from a friend in the mid- to late-1960s. It originally had white grips, which I believe were plastic. I do not know if the engraving is factory or not, but it was on the piece when he got it. The gun performs flawlessly, and I have personally fired thousands of rounds with this pistol.
