It’s hard to define the work of Jordan Gogos. From gender bending wearable art, to furniture conceived as objects, the Australian designer is one to keep a firm eye on. Add into the mix that he was crowned the next big thing following a lauded fashion show at the end of 2021 under his label Iordanes Spyridon Gogos, and it’s safe to say that he will be a household name in no time. One of Gogo’s latest collaborations was designing a technicolour pop-up bar with Glenfiddich for Melbourne Art Fair, one of many collaborations with the whisky brand. BUNDANON ART MUSEUM Fusing landscape and art, the highly anticipated Bundanon Art Museum officially opened in early 2022. Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, the new art museum incorporates a gallery, accommodation for 64 guests and a café. Dubbed the ‘Bridge’, the 160-metre-long and nine-metre-wide structure spans the gully of the historic site on the New South Wales South Coast, which was gifted to Australia by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd in 1993. The project houses a collection of artworks in a subterranean space, protecting them from the increasing risks of climate change and extreme weather like bushfires and floods. “The design is driven by Bundanon’s main imperative, as established by the Boyd family, to foster an appreciation for and understanding of landscape and art. The appeal of a large garden with lots of open space was too tempting to pass up for Richard and Scot, the owners of Tai Tapu House. Set on a one-acre block on the edge of Christchurch, the move offered them the chance to start afresh following the devastating earthquake in 2011. There is a sentimentality to this home; for Lockyer it’s a constant reminder of where they’ve come from. The foundation of tropical modernism that defines the work of Shaun Lockyer had been set in motion by the time he and his partner immigrated to Australia in 1999. Studying architecture at the University of Cape Town is where Lockyer’s passion for modernism started to take shape, which he cites as still having a significant influence on his practice today. Finding a large, 800-square-metre plot of land with a tiny cottage in an inner-city suburb is like finding a needle in a haystack. But it was this combination that appealed to the owners of Fuller Street Cottage in Brisbane, Australia. With ample backyard to play with, the young professional couple really settled into the home by establishing a veggie patch and a chicken coop. “The impetus for this renovation was to create things as simply as possible, allowing the history of the warehouse to be ‘read’ and clearly understood.” This heritage-listed warehouse in Melbourne’s Princes Hill still retains its hallmarks. Once home to John Lawson Furniture, downstairs entailed furniture making, while upstairs the timber was treated. The rugged coastline shines with saturated blue water and golden beaches that look back across the water to Freycinet.
