Greg Natale had Casa Masetti – a 1970s masterpiece by Paulo Mendes da Rocha – in mind when designing this home, with a tropical modernism that’s been translated to the Australian climate. The owners Michelle and Zack, a young professional couple, had initially engaged an architect for their home, but Natale and his team steered the project to fruition, underpinned by this strong vision. Leveraging the steep slope of the street, a high garden wall wraps around the property on two sides to create a sunken oasis. “The house sits about one and half metres below the footpath level. The clients didn’t want anybody to be able to see in, but they also wanted to have an aspect and be able to look out,” explains Anna Rozen, founder and principal architect of A for Architecture. Frame House in Singapore is defined by two courts. One is an outdoor courtyard at the front foyer where a sole Caesalpinia Ferrea tree reaches skyward, sculptural, with wide-spreading, lace-like foliage that soothes the timber deck from the tropical sun. The second is an indoor atrium, created by extruding the dining and dry kitchen area into a double-volume space. Here, a trio of curvaceous Vertigo Nova pendant lights from Petite Friture dance in the air, their skeleton frames perpetuating a sense of lightness and movement from sunlight that floods in through two tiers of windows. It’s not often that interior designers get to work with a young client whose brief spans whole anticipated chapters of a life. But when this happens – or at least, when it happened to Fremantle-based studio Design Theory – the human element of the project becomes even more obviously a focus.
