I GREW UP IN A HOUSE where underwear was only ever referred to (in the prim, quasi-joking manner perfected by WASPs) as "smalls," "delicates," or "unmentionables." When Barbara Walters traveled to Havana to interview Fidel Castro in 1977, she expected to come face-to-face with the Cuban leader's suspicion of the U.S., his vast state-security apparatus, and his prodigious, self-made mythology. Deborah Turbeville's work is seductive in its strangeness. The photographer, who died this past fall, distinguished herself with scenes of faded grandeur that seemed calculated to unsettle rather than to sell—a style that brought her into the rarefied company of Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton and helped elevate fashion photography to avant-garde status. But before she drew acclaim for her images, Turbeville worked at Bazaar, styling shoots from December 1963 to August 1965. She later trained with Richard Avedon, and returned to the magazine as a photographer. In her May 1981 shoot, a model poses, nude and introspective, a mirrored tray of perfume bottles beside her—all is grainy, golden, and saturated with some unknowable sorrow. I spent my adolescence feigning ailments to get out of gym class, and while I now go in for the occasional Pilates session, years have passed without my darkening a gym's doorway.
