THE FIRST TIME I met Zaha Hadid was about 20 years ago in London. In the 1960s, Diane Arbus photographed an eclectic range of subjects for Harper’s Bazaar, from children and socialites to artists and cultural figures—among them, the French couturier Alix Barton, known as Madame Grès, whose draped and sculpted creations were worn by Marlene Dietrich and Jacqueline Kennedy. H eight is a funny thing. It’s relative. I’m five eight and three quarters—I can’t bring myself to round up to five nine because it seems dishonest—so I’m tall but not colossal.
