After watching from the sidelines for many years, Zara Tindall was able to join her husband Mike on the course at his annual charity golf day last week. A lemon Swiss roll and amaretti trifle was last week named the winning Platinum Pudding for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. Jemma Melvin’s dessert took the title after beating 5,000 entries to become the official pudding of the four-day bank holiday weekend. Sitting in the gilded splendour of Windsor Castle’s White Drawing Room, the Queen breaks into a warm smile in this previously unseen photograph released for her Platinum Jubilee. Published here for the first time, it shows Her Majesty in a relaxed moment as she and the photographer enjoy a chat during an official photoshoot. He has published numerous books of his photos. ‘This photo was taken at Balmoral, the Queen’s Scottish holiday home, to mark her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. There is a photo of her father at that same window and that was my inspiration for this picture. I also wanted to take a picture that resonated with her speech on her 21st birthday, where she said her life “shall be devoted to your service”. After starting out shooting the worlds of rock, pop and show-business, Anwar Hussein has become one of the longest-serving of the royal photographers. He has travelled all over the world with the Queen and his reportage-style pictures have been used everywhere from royal Christmas cards to the cover of Time magazine. ‘When I took this photo at a state banquet in Canada in 1973, I wanted to create an atmosphere that felt like a casual, candlelit dinner. I used a long lens from across the table, with no flash, and the result is a very relaxed image that looks like the Queen is having dinner with friends. Back to camera and gaze turned skyward, the Queen watches a flypast of nine Jaguar fighter planes in a diamond formation at RAF Coltishall in Norfolk. Continuing our series of archive photos, celebrating the Platinum Jubilee, this image was taken in November 2005 when the Queen visited the last remaining Battle of Britain station still operating as a front-line base. Her visit and the flypast were in celebration of the airfield’s 65th birthday but also a farewell, as it closed the following year.
