There are many things happening now that I never imagined 25 years ago – not least the vinyl revival and the fact that DAC separates are now so central to hi-fi systems. WHEN PHILLIPPE PETIT walked between the rooftops of New York’s World Trade Center in 1974, he didn’t just lash up any old wire between the Twin Towers. For Black Rhodium (what respected cable guru Graham Nalty did next after DNM) this loom is about as basic as it gets. By the standards of the group, it seems almost impossibly small and light. Like Kimber, QED started making waves over here in 1979, but with its second – not its first – speaker cable. QED 79 Strand became just as legendary as the 4PR and is still in production, along with QED 45 Strand which appeared in 1975 and still remains the company’s most affordable cable. How we listen to music is becoming more and more diverse, and there are some who question the point of entry-level, affordable hi-fi separates. After all, with the sheer selection of smart speakers, portable music players, soundbars and other innumerable ways to stream anything from anywhere, the humble twochannel amplifier would seem to be something of an anachronism. Cabasse has a long history in both home and professional audio, producing an impressive range of wireless speakers, such as its flagship, The Pearl, which costs more than £2,500. If that’s a little out of your reach, then the latest addition to the French company’s range is the more affordable The Pearl Akoya. Affordable, however, is something of a relative term here as the Akoya still weighs in at a fairly hefty £1,500 for a single speaker. The design oozes quality, though, with a simple sphere available in glossy black or white and finished with a gleaming metallic trim. The sturdily built cabinet employs ‘tri-axial’ technology to house three drivers – bass, midband and tweeter. Perhaps best known for its range of compact DACs and supporting accessories, iFiAudio’s product lineup also includes a range of power management and treatment options, and the company has now added a full-size mains extension block. The basic design is a six-way block (eight in Japan and the USA) that has a single IEC mains input on the end with a power switch. Each output is placed in its own isolated chamber to avoid cross contamination and the wiring uses PurCopper – an extremely pure continuous cast copper, intended to maximise performance. A long-standing mainstay of the Russ Andrews family in the UK, Kimber Kable is pretty close to cable royalty in its native USA with all bases covered and a broad swathe of realistically priced high-end exotica for the well-heeled to chew on. It all started back in 1979 with the speaker cable in this loom. Any attempt to commit the Pro-Ject turntable range to memory would be a passable Mastermind subject. The number of models that the company builds is vast and, at times, there seems to be an inexplicable level of overlap to them. At first glance, the T1 Phono SB looks like it sits in the latter category with barely any breathing room between it and the more affordable Primary series below it and Essential above. Chinese company Topping Audio designs and manufactures USB DACs and Class D amplifiers. The DX7 Pro is a combined USB balanced DAC and headphone amp in a single smart case that incorporates the power supply. At the heart of the unit is the ESS Technology flagship ES9038Pro Sabre DAC chip. This has a high dynamic range of up to 140dB from the 32-bit, 8-channel DAC. The ES9038Pro also features ESS’ patented 32-bit HyperStreamDAC technology with -122dB total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) and support for a wide range of sampling rates. Considering the company is more synonymous with jet fighters, it was initially difficult to understand the attraction. Sometimes the hi-fi world suffers from a lack of joined-up thinking. Many of us strive hard for perfection in our purchasing of hardware, when so much of the end result remains out of our control. When the current epidemic was doing its very best to decimate the worldwide gig circuit, the streaming service made a bit of a noise about helping struggling musicians whose income had been curtailed by lockdown. What it did was introduce a system whereby you could ‘tip’ your favourite artist directly – in addition, of course, to paying your usual tenner a month subscription. Now considering a recent survey by the Musicians’ Union revealed that 19 percent of British musicians are considering abandoning their careers because of a lack of support from the Government, Spotify’s gesture looked just the job. Even including the £35 AudioQuest charge for terminating the speaker cables with crimp BFA plugs, this is, by a few pounds from the QED package, the lowest cost loom on test. Price unseen, there are few clues. True, the interconnects’ RCA plugs have shiny plastic shells and are quite small while the speaker cable, although well made and expertly terminated, was originally designed to be hidden in walls and looks somewhat ‘white goods’. More specialist outlier than household name in this group, Merlin Cables has actually been in business since 2002 and on a mission to recalibrate hi-fi cable performance-per-pound value at all price points. Well, all price points above the £370 you’ll pay for this loom, which represents the company’s best opening gambit. The loom does, however, contain items so new they don’t yet feature on the website. But this is the way MC likes it – fast-rolling development with the emphasis on getting product connected with customers’ systems. You didn’t have to be a fully paid-up member of the Cyrus fan club to notice the ONE when it landed in 2016. The architect of half-width hi-fi hadn’t included a temptingly inexpensive integrated amplifier in its lineup since its very first offering under the Mission Electronics banner back in the mid-eighties, the unfeasibly talented original Cyrus One.
