In October, a top official at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) rejected an international panel’s well-reasoned recommendation that UN countries should experiment with decriminalizing and regulating illegal drugs such as cannabis. The Global Commission on Drug Policy is a 22-person panel, formed in 2011, that includes such luminaries as ex–Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, Virgin Group billionaire Richard Branson and even ex–UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The commission’s September 2014 report, Taking Control: Pathways to Drug Policies That Work, calls for an end to criminalizing people for drug use and requiring “compulsory treatment” for individuals whose only offense is a drug violation. The commission also advocated alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent, low-level participants in manufacturing and trafficking operations. The pot-marketing agency Cannabrand found itself doing spin control to limit the damage to its reputation after insulting the cannabis community. On October 3, The New York Times ran a story titled “In Colorado, a Rebranding of Pot Inc.” It featured a profile of Olivia Mannix and Jennifer DeFalco, the co-founders of Cannabrand. Mannix said: “We’re weeding out the stoners. We want to show the world that normal, professional, successful people consume cannabis.” Right. There’s no chance in hell of a “stoner” being successful or professional or normal. She also said dispensaries “look like underground abortion clinics.” Not to be outdone, DeFalco insisted that legal cannabis ads are full of “women with whipped cream straddling bongs.” Such rhetoric hardly went unnoticed. Psilocybe cubensis—magic mushrooms—have been used in healing rituals for thousands of years; now, a new study suggests that the curative powers of shrooms may help longtime cigarette smokers kick the habit better than any pharmaceutical drug. Johns Hopkins researchers report that 80 percent of smokers receiving a controlled dose of psilocybin while participating in a cognitive-behavioral-therapy program abstained from smoking for six months—much higher than the typical success rate of less than 30 percent using nicotine replacement and behavioral therapy. Even the most effective smoking-cessation drug, varenicline, has only a 35 percent success rate after six months. The study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, observed 15 men and women who smoked, on average, 19 cigarettes a day for 31 years. All had repeatedly tried, and failed, to quit. Despite…

Hydro Basics Hydroponics is the art of growing plants without soil. A nutrient solution made up of water and plant foods is mixed in a reservoir and typically fed to the roots several times a day. The roots sit in an inert medium such as rockwool, perlite or grow rocks (also known as hydrocorn, puffed rock or expanded clay pellets). The Advantages of Keeping It Short Internode lengths are the distances between branches that emerge from the cannabis plant’s main stem. The shorter these internode lengths are, the more compact a plant will be. This, in turn, equals more plant growth proportionate to the same amount of root growth. Keeping internode lengths shorter is also important because it allows plants to develop more efficiently so that their yields can be maximized. Under a new program announced in Canada, strict guidelines have been imposed on the medical marijuana industry to ensure that the final product doesn’t contain significant levels of heavy metals, aflatoxins, pesticides or microbial contamination. These guidelines weren’t created specifically for cannabis: They’re the same Pharmacopoeia-based standards used by Health Canada for other dried natural-health products derived from plants (i.e., echinacea, ginseng and so on). While the regulations were designed to protect Canadian consumers, it’s actually quite difficult to meet these “dried product” standards by growing, drying and curing cannabis using the traditional methods. Kentucky Harvest On September 23, the first legal hemp harvest in the Bluegrass State since World War II occurred at the University of Kentucky’s Spindletop Research Farm, which is cultivating and evaluating 13 different types of hemp for seed and fiber production. Some of the seeds were shipped from Italy. They were detained by US Customs officials in May, until the Feds approved a permit. Global Gains Europe reached a new record in hemp-seed production in 2013 with 9,000 metric tons (almost 20 million pounds). In Canada, 36,000 hectares (approximately 90,000 acres) were utilized for hemp-seed production in 2014. New research proves that pot provides neuroprotection against traumatic brain injury (TBI), with THC actually limiting the presence of toxic chemicals while decreasing swelling in the brain. The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute investigated 446 TBI patients who were administered urinalysis to detect THC. Of the 82 patients who tested positive for THC, only 2.4 percent died. The remaining 364 TBI patients—who had no discernible THC in their system—had a significantly higher death rate: 11.5 percent.
