In a January interview with ESPN, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell left the policy door open for pro football players to eventually use legal medical marijuana—even if he never did actually utter the M-word. Asked if players would ever be allowed to toke up in states where it’s legal, Goodell replied: “I don’t know what’s going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve and to help either deal with pain or help deal with injuries, but we will continue to support the evolution of medicine.” So the NFL commish has now gone on record supporting “the evolution of medicine”—how courageous! The Los Angeles Police Department plans to aggressively expand the use of saliva-swab drug-testing in a program that seems intended to target medical pot patients, including those pulled over for traffic stops. Previously used only at checkpoints and in three jails, the increased swab testing will be funded by a half-million-dollar grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The money will also fund two deputy city attorneys to prosecute drivers busted by the swab test, in which saliva from a suspect’s mouth is deposited onto an absorbent strip, which then changes color to indicate either a positive or negative result. Every year for the past three years, High Times has held Cannabis Cups in both the US and the Netherlands. We’ve been to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Detroit and Amsterdam. Next year, we may add even more. At each Cup, we test anywhere from 100 to 160 flower entries and give samples to our partner labs to test for various cannabinoids, terpenoids, pesticides and molds. In Alaska, a new legalization initiative is likely to appear on the statewide ballot in November. The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana has gathered more than 50 percent over the number of signatures required to qualify for the ballot. Even with the percentage of signatures that are normally deemed invalid, the total should be more than enough to place the initiative before voters. The act would “tax and regulate the production, sale, and use of marijuana” and would permit adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of weed and grow up to six plants. It would also sanction retail stores, as in Colorado and Washington, and permit the manufacture and sale of pot paraphernalia. Public consumption would still be prohibited.
