Beyond its futuristic aesthetics, it is the first carbon negative home in Singapore and it boasts a slew of sustainable design features that has earned it the inaugural Green Mark Platinum award for landed property from the Building and Construction Authority. Referred to as B House, it is one of two family bungalows that were commissioned by a client who wanted to push the boundaries of sustainable design and not incur utility bills again. When 32-year-old doctor, Akshay and his wife, Louise, a 30-year-old lawyer, purchased this flat, it was somewhat enclosed, dark and suffocating despite being well-maintained. This was something that they asked Justin Loh, senior designer at The Interior Lab to address in the renovation. One of the biggest challenges, however, was that the couple had a lot of programmatic functions that they wanted in the flat. In addition to the usual bedroom for themselves and a nursery for their 13-month-old daughter, the couple also needed a guest room for Akshay’s parents, a helper’s room, a study, and a walk-in wardrobe within the master bedroom. World Architecture Festival, plus its sister event Inside: World Festival of Interiors, will be back in Singapore this year, after a seven-year spell in European cities. Launched in 2008 in Barcelona, the festival is a three-day annual celebration of great architecture and design from around the world. The key element from the beginning was an awards programme, with shortlisted entrants required to present their designs live, to international jurors and festival delegates. The awards format has expanded since its launch and now has four sections-Completed Buildings, Future Projects, Interiors and Landscape, with a total of 43 categories. On the first two days of the festival, we have 17 inflatable ‘crit’ rooms, where the shortlisted architects and designers compete for a ‘bestin-breed’ award, with up to 17 competitors in each category.…
