Completed in 2014, the 18,400-square-foot, architectdesigned home occupies almost the entire width of 200 feet of ocean frontage, maximising ocean views from all primary rooms. Following the purchase of the site, homeowner Katherine asked for a contemporary and elegant primary residence with ample indoor and outdoor spaces in which to entertain guests and extended family in a variety of formal and informal settings. “A striking marriage of timber and stone inform the design of this family kitchen in Sydney’s North Bondi. The expansive island dominates the space, while American oak timber slices through the opulent granite benchtop to form a breakfast bar where family and friends can gather. Timber panelling on the kitchen ceiling, in the living area and within the outdoor kitchen echoes the natural aesthetic and links the different spaces. Rich, black-painted glass forms the front of the cabinetry, juxtaposing the organic grain of the timber with dramatic effect. “This beautiful bathroom uses monochrome details and traditional touches for a classic style. The cement encaustic floor tiles create an exotic and delicate effect, while the black and white colour scheme displays a unique heritage quality. Having been handmade one by one, each tile is an artwork and when placed together, creates the most interesting design across the floor. The wall tiles are Italian handmade matt white in a unique size (130mm x 396mm) and laid in a stretcher bond style, like bricks. This small garden in Melbourne’s inner east is the width of a standard suburban block, but there are only seven metres between the boundary and the house at its widest point. Achieving design success in compact spaces is one of the many challenges faced by a landscape designer, but one that Ian Barker of Ian Barker Gardens enjoys. “In designing small gardens, there needs to be careful thought and planning to make the most of the available space,” says Ian. “Your mindset needs to be that every centimetre counts.
